Why do you guys call yourselves african american? why not call yourselves just americans? why would you want to be associated with a continent and its people that you guys don't know anything about or don't care about? outside of the US everybody call you black americans or simply americans already, so why not start a petition so that you guys don't get called African American anymore? doesn't that make sense for you guys to be just called Americans? or am i missing something here? since most black americans don't want to have anything to do with Africa anyway. you guys are Americans and you should be proud of that

This is an excellent idea! an Idea that I fully support. Many black Americans hate Africa and don't want to be associated with us "tribal primitive savages who sold their ancestors" and our "hellhole", so this recieves my full backing and I will even sign the petition.

"Why do people have a such an issue with Afr'ams calling ourselves African-Americans, but have nada to say about French-Canadians(the descendants of 17th & 18th century French settlers) identifying as such, when in actuality, they are further removed from their ancestors from France than African-Americans are from our ancestors from Africa? The British completely conquered New France(Canada) in 1760, after which French migration to the region came to a screeching halt. In fact, the British proceeded to commit genocide and expulsion against the French-Canadians, deporting many of them that came from the Acadian region of Canada, some of which ended up in Louisiana creating what we now know as Cajuns(who still to this day proudly identify as such despite being vast majority English speaking, yet no one says anything about that)."

"In fact, North American born "blacks" have been calling their selves "African" before those on the continent of Africa have. The First African Bapist Church was founded in 1773 and officially organized in 1788 by an African-American Baptist Deacon(who was born in America) in the what was then the British province of Savannah, Georgia as a place of worship for slaves in the area(keep in mind this was a time that they were still LEGALLY shipping Africans fresh off slaves ships into North America), and the African Methodist Epsicopal Church was founded in 1793 in Philadelphia as a place of worship for "free blacks" in the North. For them it was a practical form of identification, seeing as they most likely by the 2nd and 3rd generation could not point to a singular ethnic African tribe as their ethnicity, so they general "African" identity came about to denote their ancestry."

"We didn't just start calling ourselves African-American to be rebellious or for socio-political reasons in the 60s during the civil rights movement(although that is when the term gained it's prominence). This identity has always been with us just as long if not longer as the ethnically incorrect "black"(the name of an ethnic group is suppose to denote ancestry. Where the hell is "BlackLand" and when did people from there come to America?) term has. In fact, the term "African-American" is noted as appearing in print in the Oxford English Dictionary as early 1858."

I quoted this from a guy named Goop.

Since we are the offspring of African Americans, sprinkled with a dash of a few other things our name should be unique and denote to that fact.

I liked Black American just fine.

very informative indeed. but here in Canada the only people that call french canadians as such are anglophones. french canadians from Quebec call themselves Quebecers, the ones in New-Brunswick call themselves Acadians(that's where Cajun came from), and francophones everywhere else in Canada call themselves franco-(and the name of the place they live in).
And a lot of black americans don't care for Africa and don't wanna be associated with it, so why call yourselves "AFRICAN"-American? that to me doesn't make sense.

well, this is all good and all but why is it that in the media black americans are forcing people to call them African-American? an african american is supposed to be a person who immigrated recently to the US from Africa and got the american citizenship...but even then they should just be called Americans, same goes for all immigrants moving to the States. here in Canada, when you get your citizenship you're called a Canadian, none of that European-Canadian, African-Canadian, Asian-Canadian...just Canadian.
black americans should start a petition to have people stop calling you African-American

Acknowledging the African in the black American is simply out of honor to our ancestors who had been robbed of their original identity.

Why would we start a petition to do away with the term when most of us don't have a problem with it? There's nothing confusing about it, African-Americans are people who's ancestors dealt with slavery in the continental United States.

Our ancestors came from there, thats it. We are a mix of african groups, hence the term... african+american.

I have a question though,

What did you guys call that continent before the 1100s?

yes, your ancestors but not you. and the continent wasn't called anything because people were identifying with their kingdoms and all

oh but here's where you're wrong...many of you are ashamed to be associated with Africa, many of you don't like your black skin, many of you disrespect Africans in the US. so why then call yourselves "AFRICAN-American"? that's what i find kinda stupid.
