OK I gotta ask this question and please try to reply with an honest opinion. I hear a lot about how African Americans are better than Africans and the Americans regard themselves as black and they regard to Africans as Africans lol. But where dose this come from? I understand why they don’t regard Africans as black because some African countries share genetics with people of many cultures, for example east African people (like Ugandans) have traced their blood line to Europe, Asia and the middle east. And I also hear how Africans are not welcome to Jamaican night clubs and at my old college Africans and Jamaicans wouldn’t hang around each other, but it was girls that were always starting fights though. I’m not sure if its only me, but I don’t see many Africans openly disregarding African Americans and Jamaicans. Also the fact that Africa is a continent also brings another issue. Because I know this is discrimination towards Africans, but isn’t it also a form of racism against Africans. I’m sure that the diverse culture across Africa means that people from different parts of Africa have many different characteristics, cultures and people, so regarding all Africans as one is insulting. I’m not sure, please enlighten me because I’m still a little confused, even my friend who is afro-Caribbean hates being mentioned in the same sentence as Africans… what’s up with that??? Is there some sort of stereotype, like allot of people I know think most Americans are uptight and will justify the actions of their country even when its clearly wrong and like the one where Jamaican men are yardies smoking weed all day. But these are obviously stereotypes. Anyway please reply and explain to me, as to why African Americans and Jamaicans don’t like Africans?

Note though; people in Africa don't know about these problems. This is between you people out here. So maybe that has something to do with it.

I live in the UK, and I would say the friction is mainly between British Afro Caribbeans and Somalians in my area. In the last 10 years max there has been an influx of Somalians but they don't seem to be mixing. Where as Afro Carribbens have been part of british society for donkeys years and happily mix with everyone. It's different cultures/religions maybe. This may not be the case all over the UK though. You have to mix or you will become outcasts to all races.

Let me say that people in the continent of Africa are not aware of the tensions that you are talking about. Bob Marley, Peter Torch and most carribean musicians are still respected today and so are Black American musicians respected. The tension is only in the WEST where the continental africans came in contact with disporan Africans( Black Carribeans and Black Americans). Another thing is that Disporan Africans seem so happy to talk about how their ancestoral mothers were raped by the White MEN...To immigrant Africans...that is the height of self-hatred and no sense of self and self respect....because that is saying that having been tainted by the blood of a Rapist means that they are better than a Pure Continential African. If that is not self hatred..then tell me what that is?!

Well I guess it depends on where you live, but it’s a regular occurrence both sides of the pond. I’ve seen posts all over the internet that show African Americans sending comments with obvious insults. For example (on a topic regarding black people with blue eyes) one individual said black people with light eyes and light skin are obviously African American or Latin with European blood in them. I found this ridiculous because my sister and my mum both have light skin and amber green eyes and I have dark skin with light hazel brown eyes, yet we are all born in Uganda and my tribe has no evidence of having European mixing. Sure being east African I most likely have Asian, and Arabic blood due to the Indian sea trade when east Africa was the largest trading point in the world. Anyway people who are being insulting often don’t know they are doing it due to being uneducated in what insults people in other cultures. This post also found a division on African and African American people: http://www.topix.com/forum/afam/T030HPAFOF42H...

Yeah I think some AA's and some Africans do a bad job of representing their people here on Topix. However, here in Atlanta, relations between Africans and AA's are fine.

there will also be some form of tentions between different communities. over here in the uk, things have got better, but back in the days it was worse with the carribbeans vs africans, mainly west africans. africans of course were always considered ugly and uncool, especially the ones who were not born here and came fresh from the boat, over here we call them freshies. but s more africans have moved to the uk, the tensions have more or less dissapeared, im not saying they are not here at all, but definately improved. but i can only speak for london and not the whole country. now i think somalis are the group in london who get discriminated against by the rest of black people and mny people regard them as not even being black and discriminate against them, so thats why in places like woolwich you get alot of somali gangs. its a shame really.
