Festival captures spirit of Black film

Rarely do Hollywood films portray the triumphs, tragedies, trials and tribulations of experiences in America from a Black perspective. The Arizona Black Film Showcase (AZBFS) hopes to be an avenue to help Blacks in film as well as others who desire to represent the portrayal of the Black experience on the big screen accurately and void of typical stereotypes.

It's time that we represent ourselves. Every movie the white man makes with the Black man in it, the Black man is either a fool, a criminal, a coward or the first to die fighting for the life of the white woman, later for that. I'm ready to see the life story of Marcus Garvey or Ida B Wells, I'm sick of the Wayans, and the other guy that wears dresses. Not every movie that the white man makes, but most. I like films like Independence Day, Spawn, Blade and Rantoon(my film). These are films with positive black roles. I wouldn't knock the guy who wears dresses. He is very versatile having many black roles in his film. He plays Madia, he plays himself, he has a bad guy in his films and always a good black man(usually light skinned).

Man, that festival would be more worthwhile and worth of attending if we blacks had more creative and interesting films unlike those boring ass played out stereotypical in the hood, baby mama drama, flicks we make. Does the festival have nothing bu black films produced by blacks like Spike Lee, Tyler Perry, and John Singleton, or does it feature white produced films with black actors in them?Until we start making creative movies that steer clear from played out stereotypes, I wouldn't recommend any black person to attend it. It's a pretty damned and ironic shame that whites don't make movies that portray them in negative stereotypical ways unlike we do.

I dont know if this is a contiuation of urbanworld. i went to urbanworld in NYC for the first three years and i was a bit dissapointed with the film on offer.I hope there is a better range of topics on display here, Naturally i think we are good storytellers and I hope that this can be transmitted in film. i like some of spike's films, but most of the other black directors have come up short.. I know tyler perry's movies have sold well, but from the could that I have seen, they are average at best. I've seen some interesting shorts on BET jazz and i would like to see more female black directors. i forgot the name of the director of eve's bayou, and caveman's valetine. I would like to see more from her and upcoming black directors.

My new film "Angelical Courts" will be submitted to Black Film festvals. It has a very attractive Somalian female in it and I think she will be the next hot thing in the near future. It has Angels and Demons battling over this one guy's soul. My ultimate goal is to make Black films like the forbidden kingdom, hidden dragon crouching tiger, Narnia. Its going to be hard though, because whites aren't use to seeying us like that and Blacks don't support unless it is shoot em up bang bang or like Mack said, Baby Mama drama. We have to start thinking and training ourselves to see us in a different light than baby mama drama and we will go far.

We have the potential to make blockbuster movies as good as all time classics like Lord of he Rings, Star Wars, Independence Day, and etc, but that will never happen if we keep making the same old redundant predictable, unoriginal drama movies that some blacks have grown tired of seeing. Since whites aren't used to seeing us blacks produce sci-fi and fantasy films it would come as a major shock to them and blacks seemingly equate sci-fi and fantasy movies with being "white" genres of movies. And we wonder why we have very little blockbuster films around the world.

I've seen Blacks turn out for a film with a leading Black like Will Smith with whit producers. A Black fantasy film produced by a Black will get turned away from Hollywood(redlighted).

Yeah I have to admit that too even though I'm not all that fond of Perry's movies. I don't think I've ever seen a massive turnout of blacks to see his film. I don't know if it was the controversy about black marriage in his movie Why Did I Get Married that caused the large number of blacks to see it or what else, but I wonder if a black made sci-fi or fantasy movie would spark a large crowd of blacks. I doubt it. As for a black made fantasy film being rejected by whites, it's a possibility, but I guess it would depend on how good or bad it the movie is.
