In Japan they have a fashion called Ganguro girls. Though I am naturally brown skin. I am consider Ganguro girl all the time. In you guys opinion, is this a racist mocking? I don't think so. I am just wondering how you would feel if you were walking down the street in Tokyo and saw this.

I dont think its a mockery, the Japanese are way ahead in terms of fashion...but it is extreme in our American standards

in japan there is one race- japanese, as far as i know (pls correct me if i am wrong). so, assuming that ganguro is a century-long tradition in this culture, it certainly not against another human group, as there is only one racial group, and it is not about skin color. it probably means something else

No its not like that I just wanted an AA opinion. It is really a rebellion against a male dominated society. Japanese feminism. It uses to be the white face paint was used to show innocent little womanhood-to look like porcelain (not white people that would be peach) as some white people say. So its just a flip flop culture.

In Japan there are Chinese and other Eastern and southern Asian people but very little. I was the only person I new that had a black mother in school. I was the only black person. But I was Japanese through and through. I was never teased for have brown skin in a bad way lol...they use to call me a bad girl cus the white makeup is to show you are a good girl and I was like the opposite. lol

hi, thanx for responding!! ok this is interesting what you are saying. i kind of had a similar experience at school but not because of my skin, because of my hair. it is kinky, as compared to straight or wavy hair most people in my birthplace have. but i was never teased in a bad /racist way i would have been had i grown up in the US. it just seems to me that in the US physical characteristics have a deep meaning behind, that does not exist in other places and cultures.

How are we suppose to know? Are they doing it because of mockery? Or are they doing it because of imitation and wanting to have brown skin?

You know more about their culture than we do.

When was the last time you were in Japan? It changes but it hasn't went anywhere. You sure like to act like you know a lot about other cultures. Tell us something about your own GD culture if you know anything about it ?

Thanks for the info; I figured it was a cultural custom and not mokery.

Both...some people want to look like a black girl and others do it for political reasons. There as so many fashion fads in Tokyo, but I just wanted to share this particular one and get opinions.

LOL I'm well aware of that and I had no idea the Ganguro fad was still going on in Japan. I'd be shocked that they still do that, and a little offended even though it wasn't the Japanese women's intent to offend us. I know that the trend was spawned by the popularity of female hip hop and r&b artists of the 90's like TLC, Xcsape, Mary J Blige, and Lil Kim, but some other blacks would take offense to that.

Interesting. I didn't know about that the whole black face thing being a rebellion against the sexist male dominated society from the Japanese women. Oh and don't even get me started on the Bubble Sisters, that I take you are familiar with?

No they aren't. They are slowly becoming more open to black people and it shows the way how the Japanese youth highly idolize today's black rappers and r&b artists. Get your head out of your ass and stop being so ignorant to other cultures.
