A lot of what has been said about Indian people on this thread reflects the kind of ignorance that many people possess when it comes to minority races in North America. I am not Indian, but am originally from around there, and am also of the same racial background as Indians. To me, color, traditions and cultural beliefs are merely labels. I do not judge individuals based on these factors, but rather on what kind of people they are. There are certain criteria that I expect my partner to fulfill, and if these are met, I don't give much of a rats behind about the color of her skin. When I say criteria, I mean compatibility as far as intellects and mindsets are concerned. I want to have fun with the person I am dating, want to be able to understand her better, want her to understand me, and want to become a strong sensual bonding.
We are in the 21st century, and much as I would like everyone to consider all humans as a single race, it is true (and unfortunately so) that problems of racism lie within pretty much all communities. People of all races stink; all groups have members with bad hygiene practices; all races have beautiful people. In my opinion, the world has come to a point where, through social awareness and a little bit of self-evaluation, we can all keep racial barriers behind us and rise beyond such social norms and stereotypes that have caused hatred among people for ages.
On a more personal note, I am moving to New York soon, and am really looking forward to the diversity and meeting people of different backgrounds.
OK So there are Indian guys who like Black women. A friend told me about a post on a blog that spoke about Indian interracial dating http://www.sepiamutiny.com/sepia/archives/004...
and some guys also mentioned that they liked a variety of women. But some Indian girls said that Indian guys don't even approach their own women sometimes. What gives?

I doubt that the Hindu men would date a black women, whereas the Dravidians are more likely to marry a black person than a Hindu since we have the same skin color.
Actually, it's not only blacks they don't want their children marrying OUTSIDE of their race and culture PERIOD.

Right. Those Hindus(light skin Indians) are promoting white supremacy ideals on the Dravidians as well as all blacks out in the diaspora because they desperately aspire to be like Europeans even though they ironically look down on them for wanting to be like them and for having poor hygiene.

Okay, I'm Indian, and I just want to say the words above are just so ignorant.

Indian does not = hindu (though some fundamentalist Hindus try to do this);
Indians can come in all colors and religions - the country has one of the largest Muslim populations - if not the most;

This crap about Hindus being light-skinned Indians is crap. Hindus can come in all sizes and colors. The Indian subcontinent has been overrun centures ago with people from all over and therefore the variation.

I think in the US we have such a dichtomy betwen who is black and white and often has to do with skin color. In India you can have families with a very dark skin child and a light skinned mother. Here's a good link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dravidian_people

So this crap about Hindus v/s Dravidians is just ignorant. Dravidian has more to do with language. The Dravidian languages come from primarily South India and these languages contrast with many languages up North who derive from Sanskrit (English and Latin also derive from Sanskrit).

So Mindy Kaling (from The Office): http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1411676/

is South Asian (well she's actually South Asian American) and so is Aishwarya Rai: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0706787/ is South Asian (in this case they are both Indian descent, as opposed to from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, etc.)

Aishwarya is from South India and I'm not sure where Mindy Kaling's family is from; They are a mix, like all South Asians of the many people who overran that area and there is no racial divide between the white "Hindus" and the so-called dravidians. In India there is a preference for light-skin as far as beauty, but there's never been apartheid between dark-skinned Indians and light-skinned Indians - it's just not like in the US.

Sheesh...get some history in there (and this directed only at the people like the person who made the above comment). I live in America and I don't sit there and make baseless stereotypes of people that I meet from other cultures.

When i went to India on a school trip a few years back that was the WORST TIME OF MY LIFE!!!! I was taunted in the street simply because i was black the children were taunting me too!! I visited a school and all the children were making monkey noises when ever the black people walked in the classroom. i was spat on in the streets plus some Indian man had the cheek to tell me that i should bleach my skin. I've had bad relationships with Indians in the past when i was 17 i had an Indian boyfriend and although he was dating me he still had racist opinions towards black people.

I think the hertitage of the Dravidians is open to debate, there are so many scholars that are contradicting each other on the origin of these people, RUNOKO RASHIDI claims them as a lost tribe of African descent, having migrated to India from what is now called Ethiopia.There are always two sides to every story, I can imagine a lot of Indians would prefer if they actually have the same heritage as the Cauasian race, but if you foLlow these links you can make your own mind up, like you say ASHA 'get some history in there' also get some history that doesn't have a unfair balance i.e EUROCENTRISM

http://www.cwo.com/~lucumi/india.html

http://www.itsabouttimebpp.com/Announcements/...

I repeat all can make their own minds up, THERE IS ALWAYS TWO (NOT ONE) SIDE TO EACH STORY.

It doesn't have anything to do with wanting to be caucasian - it has to do with fact. The research on genetics and linguistics some of which were cited in the Wiki article, were white people who did it. These historicans/geneticists/lingui sts have backed their research thru peer review and documentation for everything.

Look if a dalit in India is looking for a bone marrow transplant he/she will find it in South Asia, from someone from any caste, not from a person in Nigeria. And it doesn't matter if this dalit has got skin as black as coal.

The guy, purported researcher, you cite has no credibility - nothing is documented and I'm sure nothing has been given to peer review. His research seems vapid.

I don't know why you and this researcher (and I'm assuming your of African descent) want to make baseless "race" connections. Why can't you just look at the truths of your culture and language and be proud of it.

Anyways I've experienced racism by different types of people and the thing is to try and not affect how I treat people individually. There's going to be racists from every culture, I'm sure, but I just choose friends who aren't racists.

Hey Kendra,

Well there's no direct explanation/reply to your question. A lot depends on individual preferences, IMO, and individuals can only speak for themselves. For example, I know an Indian girl who only likes Asian and white men, and will not approach guys from other races. As racist as it may sound, I guess we can't say much when it comes to personal preferences; because it's not like she is in any way rude to people of different colors, and it's not like she doesn't have brown/black friends either.

Another explanation that I can think of is that when one stops caring about the racial background of his potential partner and starts respecting women for who they are, it might just happen that, completely coincidentally, he doesn't come across any woman of a particular race that he might find interest in. So if many Indian guys do not approach Indian women, it may just be because they are not looking for women of any particular race, and all the women that they have found approachable just haven't happened to be Indian by coincidence.

Some of the posts on the other blog said that there are alot of expectations when an Indian woman meets an Indian man (in terms of dating), and that this was a turn off sometimes. It's just that I hope Indian men don't feel that with Black women there are no expectations. That's why I started this post. I know that people are individuals, but people are people: they are prone to prejudices as well as tolerance.

I just like to break it to you - don't even bother about South Asian women. All they look from you is your "black booty" which is like a forbidden meat. Once they've tasted it, they won't care about you much. Indian men are pretty much racist and wouldn't raise a family with anyone apart from White girls who are considered trophies by small-dick indian men. Indian women, on the other hand when they date interracial, do consider Black men.

So you are discrediting the fact that there is a African some Indian Tribes: what about the Siddi's of Gujarti http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siddi , I know for a fact that Indian deseraptly strive to to considered as Whites but to no prevail & I'm Surinamese (BLACK) & inmencely proud of my culture & heritage, the Black race is the most imitated culture probably in the whole world, just look at the global impact of Hip Hop, Reggae & Soul music.

Thanks for posting this link. It's really informative. Since I've been hearing both sides of the issue, I decided to do a little research of my own. In a nutshell, Africans have been in India for thousands of years as stated previously and here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siddi http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/1035389... (this link has their music). I've been reading "The Karma of Brown Folk" by Vijay Prashad http://www.amazon.com/Karma-Brown-Folk-Vijay-...
and he's a good author who speaks about issues surrounding race in America, namely between Asians and African Americans.
