Wilding for Profit
So now the Central Park Five are $40 million richer.
Its all thanks to Mayor de Blasios decision to lavish taxpayer funds on a group of thugs whove been lionized in film and feted by the City Council as innocent victims of a racist conspiracy after their convictions for raping and beating a young jogger in 1989 were overturned.
Justice at last? Hardly.
The Post has always been skeptical of the belated claim by serial killer Matias Reyes claim that he alone raped jogger Trisha Meili. Under Mike Bloomberg, the city resisted intense political pressure to settle the fives lawsuit with good reason.
There remains strong evidence that, as famed anti-corruption prosecutor Michael Armstrong found in his review of the case, the five more likely than not took part in the jogger attack.
There was overwhelming evidence theyd been in the park that night, engaged in a series of wilding assaults. Reyes himself who was never questioned under oath before the convictions were vacated told a fellow inmate a group of kids assaulted the jogger before he came on the scene.
Indeed, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that two doctors who treated her say some of her wounds were not consistent with Reyes account, and that there were several sets of handprints indented on her thighs, suggesting multiple attackers.
The five were convicted on the strength of their videotaped confessions, made in the presence of parents or guardians after full Miranda warnings.
Most significantly, the jurors knew when they convicted the five that no DNA connected them to the rape and DNA of another unidentified assailant had been found at the scene. Still, they concluded the evidence left them with no grounds for reasonable doubt.
Yet now the five, having been declared exonerated and hailed as casualties of racism, will be handed a huge check. This is the real miscarriage of justice.
