We all know this day is the day we observe MLK's b-day. My employer is recognizing it as a standard holiday. That's good right? The thing is, we use to be off Jan 1st and Jan 2nd. They took away Jan 2nd to observe MLK's birthday on Jan. 19. Of course I am glad that I finally work at a company that recognize's his birthday as a standard holiday, but I think that it should be observed without taking another day from us. It should be a given.

Some of my co-workers,(caucasion) made comments that they would rather be off on and come in on MLK's bday. Another said, "THEY" finally got their day.(heard through the cubicle walls, lol). One said, WE don't get off for George Washington's birthday! I never felt uncomfortable around them until after the announcement of the observation of MLK's bday.

My question to you all: Are these people racist or are they just discruntal about not having Jan. 2nd off?

I feel that some whites just feel that black people don't deserve anything at all. I don't know if you would call them racist or not. But that is just what I have noticed.

Funny. I have noticed that these same white who annually complain about MLK day. Are the same ones 99% of the time will quote him when trying to attack blacks on race issues. lol

Interesting. I know that some places pick and choose on a yearly basis. What you have off this year might not be the same for the next. By taking away Jan 2nd, I think that is fair. No company wants to just give you off for the hell of it. My sister works for Gucci and has to come in on the 2nd and is not off for MLK b-day. The comments by your co-workers were tasteless and unfair in my opinion. Nobody says anything about the rest of the holidays being "theirs". They sound like a bunch of haters, and superiority rings in their words. "They" I think it's ignorant of them not to appreciate the significance of his b-day.

soounds racist to me. Incidentally feel free to tell your white coworkers that Washington and Lincoln's birthdays are celebrated on the same day, It's called President's day

I'm not sure if it's racism or just cultural insensitivity that causes people to have a problem with MLK day. I do have to agree with Bossy, though, most companies are all about the profits and paying employees on a "voluntary" holiday does not make good business sense to them. And George Washington's birthday is celebrated on President's Day.

Lol. One of the ones who made the comments was one of the same ones that wore black the day after Obama won the elected. He (who happens to be gay) said it represented a death of a nation. I found it ironic b/c Obama is for the rights of gays.

I agree. I don't have a problem with working on the 2nd at all. The comments were upsetting.

LMAO! I wanted to go there but you know how it is. After I would have said that, I would have been accused of being aggressive and starting trouble in the workplace.

Lol, I agree. MLK fought for civil rights not BLACK rights. So I am confused to why they don't see the signifigance of his observation.

Yeah I would. You wouldn't want to be seen as "the trouble maker" in the office if you said otherwise. Thats what they would say about you instead of taking responsibility for themselves due to the fact they are trouble makers & make ppl. feel uncomfortable!!! Am I right girl???
