I have gotten my hair permed for most of my life, it's grown past my shoulders, but the reason it's been that length is because it was able to in the first place.
I'm not mixed. Neither is my father, or mother.
I go to work everyday and see black women like me, with long natural hair.
It is permed, but if you really know your hair you can DEFINITELY tell a weave/extensions from the hair that grows directly out of one's scalp.
well, then you're living denying about black women hair. The reason you relaxed or permed your hair is to make it more softer, isn't it? making it more straight by perming. many black women relax their hair period.why? in order to make it more softer...
you have got shoulder hair length is because you have permed it....permed hair is NOT your natural hair.....anyway I just see what I experienced.....if it look good on you, you can do what you like with your hair, and do what makes you comfortable.

peace to u

LOL@ I really want to grow out my own natural hair. Don't you know that every women want long natural hair? but the reason many women put relaxer, straighten it and all is because of the fact " MANY BLACK WOMEN HAIR DON'T GROW UP"
Lets take black celebrity women for example. Does most have long hair? NO, why ? because MANY black women hair don't grow up....it is the truth, no need to hide, the more you accept the truth, the more you will be happy about yourself........some have long hair because they mixed......
Well, it is good you comb your own natural hair.....and its good you appreciate your own natural hair.
Comb it for hours:) I won't do that:)
Lies, lies and more lies. Can we put to rest the myth that black hair doesn't grow long. Just because there are ignorant black women and other racists who know NOTHING about black hair and misunderstand it, doesn't mean it doesn't grow long.

First off, black hair grows out and not down. However the sheer sizes of some of those fros indicates just how long black hair grows.

100% kinky, nappy, tightly coiled hair, does grow quite long with the right TLC.

Here's are some non-mixed black women with kinky long hair.

and many others. Ignorance and damage to our hair is what stunts its growth, not genetics.

No, it is not a myth at all. Those women you put from youtube don't look pure african/blacks....have you been in Africa? you don't find that kind of hair . Those videos you posted have been mixed in the past....and they put it in youtube like " I am a black women with kinda long hair" like it is something unique..so I tell you " Many black women hair don't grow up" and unless you accept that then many will not be happy with yourself. There is nothing wrong with having wolly , short hair.

Everything is related to racist to you? that shows your lack of self esteem. when someone express the truth, you call it racist. Get over it. I am not racist or near a racist. and I tell you self hating blacks people are the people who come and say that black women hair is long when we know that most hair don't grow. But since you don't like your short nappy hair, you come up and say that black women hair is long and so on. that shows self hate, you know and I know that most black women hair don't grow...why not accept it?

Just like most white women can't have big butt, if a white women come and say white women have big butt, then she is insecure about her butt.....so unless black people accept the beauty of having nappy hair, short hair then you still will be considered as hating yourself, and when you hate your own self then why do you expect others to love you?

I am saying what I feel. I know many hates to hear it but this is the truth.

anyway peace..

By the way white women butt don't even look nice but they make sure that flat butt is beauty by putting no butt women in the magazine, so black people should also put nappy/ short hair beauty in the magazine instead of trying to be somebody they're not.

Like lauren hill, she always try to beautify her true nature not pretending to be somebody else..

It is a myth. American black people are not pure African (althouh some Africans have soft, curly hair). Yes many of us do grow long hair. I went from super short curly natural to shoulder length in 9 months or so. Yes, I have other things in my background racially, but I am still primarily black. My daughter has long hair. My cousin can grow hair to her waist. Yes we can grow hair. Most women have a problem with hair growth due to too tight braids, chemicals and weaves, which pull the hair out. I never wear weaves and am careful with chemicals and do not over process or use chemicals too often. This is why black men who wear braids tend to have very long hair once the braids are taken out. They have no chemicals in their hair, therefore it grows quickly. The more chemicals in the hair, the greater the potential for damage. It doesn't change the rate of hair growth, but the damage makes it break and split faster. Consider that people who wear dreads tend to grow very long hair for the same reason- lack of chemicals. Waist length dreads are not uncommon. My coworker is white, and her hair seems to grow slowly, but she also has damage from perms and color, so this is not just something that black women deal with. Any excessive damage will make any hair type break. Black women tend to use more chemicals (color and relaxer, either overlapping too often or using too strong formulations) so the damage tends to be more common. This is why I'll never relax my daughter's hair. She can choose to do so when she is 16. My husband's people are Haitian and they use a flat iron, never relaxers, and they have long hair. It's all in how you care for your hair. My mother has owned a salon for 25yrs and can grow hair on a doorknob! Show me a woman with hair that does not grow, and in most cases I can figure out what she is doing to stunt that growth, and what she can do to facilitate growth.

this is plantation brain washing that has been passed down from generations as we continue to put this on our young ones.
I know there are many straight hair apologists who will rush this board with all kinds of flawed logic and self delusional excuses why its ok, but im here to tell you THAT ITS NOT !!
this is a constant multigenerational psychological assault that is designed to degrade the self-image and thus the emotional state and temperment of black women.
any of you ever here the "Wille Lynch" story. The story itself is not really about any one guy named lynch. Its about a general campaign of psychological warfare that many slaveowners used and their tactics to break blacks mentally.
Remember the part where he says "if you can break the women you can break the race" or something to that effect. These racists KNOW that mothers are the key to many things in early development and to get to them psychologically is to dammage the entire people.
and the straight hair worship is just one tactic that was used for this purpose. and its one that WE ourselves not keep upon ourselves.
wake up !!!
C/S,1000%,most of these wigs look like a rats nest,i am APPAULED THAT there are BLACKMEN AND WOMEN THINK these styles look attractive.

Oh...in response to the thread...straight is not better than curly is not better than kinky. The problem lies in the mentality that any one type of hair is better than another. They all have their own unique beauty.

My hair is NOT long because I permed it.
EXAMPLE: Take ANYONE'S hair that is naturally curly, curled with an iron.
Take one of their curls, then pull on them from the bottom.
What happens? You will see the hair's actual length.
Curly, kinky, "nappy" hair shrinks in length naturally but once it's straightened/pulled on it is longer because it has no curve.
I've ALWAYS had long hair because it's in my genes.

If someone wants to see their hair length, they can't measure it while it's curly/puffy they have to straighten it.

It is a fact that more wigs are sold to black women than any other race of women. Why? because they don't like their real hair. Most afro-hair looks like moss on a rock or one of those chia pets.
It is not very attractive and you can read the new version of the nursery rhyme, Goldie locks. The black version is called, nappy locks.

Well i love my nappy hair, i love it and so does my hubby. Whoever said that black women cant grow long hair just lied. In most cases we stunt our own hair by adding all these harsh chemicals that in the long run just spoil our hairs

But am happy that african women and women of african descent are going natural in greater numbers more than ever
