in many respects the jim crow years were worse than slavery. aa were suppose to get land and the means to work the land during reconstruction, so they could live. but of course that never happened.<quoted text>
Great thread that shows when people were trying to do for themselves or "pick themselves up by the proverbial boot strap" some white woman had to go and lie and get the whole town burned down. And after the town was burnt down the whites then complain about how Blacks refused to work and were lazy, and didn't own their own businesses.
All part of the American hypocrisy, with racist men like Strom Thurmond forcing the Black female hired help to have sex with them and making babies, and then chimped out if someone even whistled at a white woman. Or made the mistake of riding in an elevator with a white woman.
without any land or money or legal protections, most aa were forced to sell themselves back into slavery as share croppers. and other menial slave wage jobs.
sometimes a young attractive black girl from a desperate family, could get a job as a domestic or in a store, where sexual exploitation was always expected as just part of the job. which makes the politics of the strom thurmond's of the south even more evil.
