Maxilla (upper nasal prognathism) sheds new light on early humans
Quote:
An ancient fragment of a maxilla in Torquay Museum, Devon, could be the oldest example from a modern human yet found in Europe. The bone, which has been in the museum for the past 80 years, was excavated by the Torquay Natural History Society in 1927 from Kent's Cavern, and has only three teeth.
The maxilla is currently the oldest dated fragment of a modern human in Britain and the second oldest in Europe. Radiocarbon dating had previously dated it to about 31,000 years ago, but now scientists have discovered that it is more than 6,000 years older than previously thought.
Dr Roger Jacobi of the British Museum, and Dr Tom Higham from the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit found that the jawbone had been strengthened by the addition of paper glue probably sometime soon after discovery, thus contaminating the specimen and making its current radiocarbon age of 31,000 years ago suspect.
Their research involved the radiocarbon dating of samples of animal bones from the sediments of the cave just above and below the area where the jawbone was found. The research indicated that this layer dated to between 37,000 and 40,000 years ago, making it much older than previously thought.
The jawbone was originally identified as an anatomically modern human by anatomist Sir Arthur Keith in the 1920s. But the new date puts Sir Keith's work in a new light. The result poses fresh questions because if the jaw is anatomically modern, from the Cro-Magnon period as Sir Keith believed, then these people spread across Europe reaching Britain far earlier than is currently thought.
If, however, Sir Keith was wrong and the jaw is from a Neanderthal, this will be the first direct evidence of Neanderthals on mainland Britain.
It is hoped that the issue will be resolved by extracting DNA from one of the teeth. The fossil is currently on display in Torquay Museum.

Qoute:
For much of his academic career, Bar-Yosef's focus has been the Stone Age - known as the Paleolithic - when early Homo sapiens went by the name Cro-Magnon and lived side by side with a human cousin, the Neanderthal.

His work, conducted with colleagues from the United States, France, and Israel, has focused on three Israeli caves that paint a picture of early habitation by modern humans migrating north out of Africa and a later migration by Neanderthals south out of southeast Europe or Turkey. It is this mix of human species and the later departure of Cro-Magnon man out of the Middle East to colonize Neanderthal-dominated Europe that fascinates Bar-Yosef.

[...]

It's his interest in an earlier prehistoric revolution that spurs Bar-Yosef's investigation of the Neolithic. Bar-Yosef believes it was some type of technological revolution that gave Cro-Magnon humans the upper hand over Neanderthals some 35,000 years ago. It was at that time, after thousands of years of coexistence, that Cro-Magnon began to multiply rapidly, expanding into a Neanderthal-dominated Europe and into Asia. It is also at that time that Neanderthals began to decline, eventually disappearing entirely.

[...]

The group working at Kebara was using relatively new thermoluminescence and electron spin resonance dating techniques, an improvement over radiocarbon dating, which cannot date fossils earlier than 40,000 years ago. In addition to using the new techniques at Kebara, they applied them to the fossil-bearing layers at a nearby cave, Qafzeh.

Qafzeh, about 25 miles away, was a cave with an archaeological past. It was first excavated in the 1930s. It was excavated again in the 1960s by Bernard Vandermeerasch from the University of Bordeaux. Bar-Yosef did additional work there in the late 1970s with Vandermeerasch. Human fossils, mostly in well-organized burials, had been found in Qafzeh. The fossils resembled modern humans. Under the prevailing thought of the time - that Neanderthals were the ancestors of modern humans - the Qafzeh remains should be more recent than the Neanderthal remains at Kebara.

[...]

That discovery shook up the prevailing scientific view of the time that Neanderthals were direct human ancestors and grandfathers of Cro-Magnons on the human family tree. The remains at Qafzeh proved that Neanderthals and the ancestors of modern humans diverged at some point, with Neanderthals existing at the same time as Cro-Magnons, more akin to cousins of modern humans than grandfathers.

[...]

From his work at Kebara and Qafzeh, a picture was emerging of early modern humans as the Levant's original occupants. That picture showed that Neanderthals were latecomers, pushing south and east from their native Europe.

-->>Bar-Yosef then turned his attention to the beginning of the story, looking for indications of when those early human Cro-Magnons first came from Africa.<<--

[...]

Bar-Yosef said that, though no human remains were found during that work, the cave helped illustrate how those first immigrants from Africa lived.

[...]

"What we're trying to find out is when did modern humans come out of Africa and did modern human traits spread by slow diffusion or rapid migration," Bar-Yosef said.

Biography of Richard G. Klein

Erica Klarreich , Freelance Science Writer

As long as 160,000 years ago, people who looked like modern humans roamed Africa. For more than 100,000 years, these populations remained small in number and were confined largely to Africa. Approximately 50,000 years ago, despite no apparent physical change, a subset of these people dramatically altered their behavior, producing the first artifacts unequivocally deemed to be jewelry and inventing new technologies, such as projectile weapons, that allowed them to fish and to hunt dangerous prey. Over the next 15,000 years, these Stone Age hunter–gatherers spread from Africa to Europe, and, wherever they appeared, the Neanderthals, who previously inhabited Europe, rapidly disappeared.

For the last 35 years, Stanford paleoanthropologist Richard G. Klein has intensively investigated the artifacts and animal bones that he and others have excavated at South African Stone Age sites, helping to illuminate the behavioral leap that led to the modern human's expansion out of Africa. He has pioneered the analysis of animal bones in understanding human culture. His research has painted a detailed portrait of the behavior and ecology of the more primitive hunter–gatherers who lived more than 50,000 years ago during the Middle Stone Age (MSA) and of the more sophisticated people who succeeded them in the Later Stone Age (LSA).

Klein takes pride in being an integral part of the archaeological community in South Africa. In July 2002 he was elected president of the South Africa Archaeological Society. In 2003 Klein was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences. His Inaugural Article, published in this issue of PNAS, describes animal remains and stone artifacts that date from the MSA in a South African rockshelter (1). Klein and his colleagues suggest that the people who lived in the shelter exploited coastal resources much less effectively than later people, providing further evidence that a major advance in hunting and gathering took place approximately 50,000 years ago in Africa.

Moron. It is well known in anthropology that Grimaldi was a false designation. There is no such type. The first Homo sapiens in Europe were Cro-Magnon, from the Mideast.

Wrong. Jewelry appears earlier than that. Complex tools, such as for fishing, appear in S Africa even before OOA. OOA was earlier than 50,000 years ago.

People did not go to Europe from Africa. They were in the Mideast for millenia first. Cro-Magnon I are descended from IJ, which is Mideastern, descended from IJK which is Mideastern, descended from CF which is Mideastern.

Klasies River Mouth are not Cro-Magnon, nor indicate that Cro-Magnon came out of Africa. They represent Upper Palaeolithic culture, which developed in Africa before OOA, and was possessed by all Homo sapiens by the time of OOA.

Everyone at that time was more like australoids or Africa, you idiot.

Eurasians were still adapting and evolving.

So were Africans of course, who are today not the same as the original Homo sapiens. For one thing, W-Central Africans since the Eurasians left in OOA hybridized with Homo heidelbergensis.

It is known that CF is of Eurasian origin, and so how the hell could Cro-Magnon have come out of Africa? LOL!!!
