Not suppose to be into metal music because you're black??? Well somebody should go and tell all the dudes singing and playing in metal bands they can't do that cause they are black. lolImmediately I was ridiculed over the way I looked. I wasn't dressed like a thug, I had spiky white hair.. In the school I went to that was predominately white- people thought I looked so cool,(though I'm the kind who doesn't much care what others think- except my family of course or closest friends).
They thought I looked like an anime character- they'd always call me a real life anime character it was funny. In the predominately black school however, I was supposed to be gay, because black guys aren't supposed to be into metal music. "WHAT? You speak other languages?" "What country are you from, because you don't sound like a real black guy". Sad thing is, it wasn't just students behaving this way towards me, but teachers too- adults!
I was looked at, and treated as some kind of oddity lol- I wasn't depressed or anything, I thought it was hilarious. Of course none of the girls wanted to date me, and I was always called "white boy". Then they had the nerve to get mad, when a white girl came to the school, who was a metal head like me, started hanging out with me, and later dating me (still together), and sometimes we'd cut (shhhh) and sneak into CBGB's (her brother worked there). It was out of this world their behavior, and when they found out I had white people in my family- oh it was non stop with the stupid racism.
Later I moved to Pennsylvania- mixed school, I liked that- I like diversity. The security guards were actual cops, and I noticed the kids who were moving from NY/NJ who were all thugged up, ALWAYS had trouble with them.
One day I was late, and rushing to class, and the officer came up to me- and I expected him to be a dick, not because I'm black, but because I was late. He goes "you're that game designer kid right?" I'm like "yeah". He starts going on and on about how his son is trying to get into that, he's walking with me and talking-gets one of the admin to write a pass for me- tells me to have a good day, I say the same back to him, which kinda shocked him- because black or white, people were disrespectful to those guys a lot- and I wasn't raised to be like that.
As far as I know, black people can be as individual as say, a white person, vice versa. Mate, just be yourself, when you hit your forties like I am, you'll realise having angst over what other random people may or may not think of you means jack.
The ONLY people that count in life is family and those special friends you make along the way.
I have a son into metal, a daughter who is a petite pretty 18 year old blonde blue eyed girl that *looks* the "type " that would follow Beiber (there, said the distasteful word...lol) but is into Iron Maiden, Ghost and a host of others whose names escape me. She has also copped flack from peers for her non conformist tastes, but now doesn't give a hoot. The remaining daughter has a range of tastes from classical to country and western, but hates metal.
You sound like you've got your head screwed on and unlike others are not sheep like in behaviour. Good for you!!
