Stupid Cali girl....... I AM NOT MIXED! I am a true by definition Afro-Creole, descendant of African brought to colonial Louisiana. Something you could never in a million years claim.
you mean you descended from the pure-blooded africans brought here like jean st. malo....i couldn't claim that, because well, i'm FARRR from being pure anything. But you are afro-creole only if you have something about you that is creole such as culture and surname. Jean St. Malo had a creole surname and given name and he was raised in the culture, so he is creole..a TRUE black creole. The creoles I posted on my vids are mixed race/mulatto creoles.

If your last name is something like Reinstein or Smith, then other creoles see you as african american unless your mother has a creole surname, that's just the way it is. And i'm talking about creoles that aren't colorstruck. You've got the mixed creoles (like my own father) that would just look at you once and if you're darker than a paper bag they wouldn't say you are creole. Now i know better than to say that, because creoles come in all shades and cultures from mostly (purely african/haitian-looking) to pure spanish/french white.

soul and Gen,

You both have good points. Louisiana Creoles, like anyone else who wants to find good jobs, some migrated to places like Los Angeles, CA, Michigan, and Chicago. Yeah to be Louisiana Creole, you must have family or you yourself who resided and came from Louisiana. No such thing as a Louisiana Creole whose family and themselves born and raised all their lives in Alaska lol but you can't tell some people that on this AA forum. It's like referring to a Haitian Creole as a Mauritian Creole, similar but not the same. You two will be back and forth about this for the next month lol smh. soul, I loved the video :).

Yes there are "black" Creoles or Afro-Creoles, mixed race Creoles (me), and French Creoles much like that video of one I posted before and some I've gone to high school with. Augustine Comeaux (although that's not his real name) is a mixed race Creole. Check out his video(s). You can find every type of Louisiana Creole in almost the same porportion in Louisiana. I'm not sure how it is there in Texas those who migrated there.

um WHY can people from puerto rico (a majority mixed race...with BLACK country) get away with totally denying their black roots (and claim to be mestizo/something other than black) and creoles get lambasted as "passe blancs" and "uncle toms" that want to be white? This is the kind of bullsht that i'm talking abt, this is cultural genocide at its finest.

I give up on these self hating fools. If I had two black American parents, I would refer to myself as black or black American. Why can't they just love being black with two black parents and move on? It's obvious.
soup...this isn't a contest about who is "more creole". I'm simply stating facts. However we seem to have different agendas here.

1) you want creoles to be recognized as PURE african descendants of Louisiana slaves....I include mixed race as well as french/spanish whites into the equation.

2) you want creole to be recognized as more culture based than ethnic/race based mixture. I say that there must be mixture and familial history (with pure afro-descendants they have to have french/spanish surnames and more cultural evidence) involved to be recognized as creole.

3) You say that you have to live in a certain part of the United states to be a "true creole" and that I (living in Cali) am too far away from the "homeland"...i say that because creole is a cultural as well as ethnic group distinct from AA with a distinct history, that you can be creole anywhere you go because people can't erase your heritage, genetics, and origins.

4) you say that i'm a "piss-yellow girl" of "mutt" stock that is a mongrel "it" living in Cali, I responded to your racist diatribe by calling you a "burnt geechee"...an eye for an eye I say, but it was YOU who started the color-rant, NOT me...Who is the mature one here?

Do you understand my argument more, or are you going to still try and make this a purist-rant?

Many on here wouldn't have been able to name all of these cities. I feel you on being more Caucasian-Mexican culturally than Creole being where you are located. Ugghhh don't call yourself white washed lol. You don't seem white washed. You just seem like you know you are proud of your heritage, ALL of it instead of allowing others to dictate whether you are white or black as if white and black are the only two groups in the entire world. I bet people can't tell you what Indo-European is what they look like but I guarantee you there's at least a dozen people on here who would say Indo-Europeans are black lol. Yeah I'm a proud Louisiana woman but I have love for Texas, particularly east Texas like DFW on down and over going towards Louisiana. It's like my second home :). It reminds me of back home with their accents, the food, and I can find many fellow New Orleanians there which makes me feel at ease. My grandfather lives in San Francisco (or maybe he went back to Sacramento). He's always back and forth. He has two homes, one in each of those cities.

why is this SO unbelievable to yall who are relatively UN-MIXED i mean like WTF i thought you of all people URU would be able to understand, seeming as you are what...a mixed brazilian guy right? Or are you mostly pure african like soup?

um because you REFUSE to call yourself black and want to be anything other than black even if it's a made-up race. I bet NO ONE else can find out what a jussara is either. Call ME a fool, at least i'm not walkin around lookin like kunta kente calling myself a "dark cicada" for my race.

as for rural vs. urban creoles. i can answer you this one thing...rural creoles like yourself have proven yourself to me to be countrygrammar-ghettofabulous compared to us rich and refined urban creoles. because you don't know what the fk you are talking, number one.

number two, creole ORIGINALLY REFERED TO THE AFRICANS WHO WERE BORN IN NEW ORLEANS OF AFRICAN BORN PARENTS... THEN IT WAS APPLIED TO ALL PERSONS BORN ON NEW ORLEANS SOIL OF FORIEGN BORN PARENTS.

has nothing to do with being mixed.

You're both correct. Creoles are not only black people or fully black as you say. In Louisiana, the term Creole came to represent children of black OR racially mixed parents as well as children of French and Spanish descent with no racial mixing (or French, Native American, AND African descent such as the singer, Beyonce Giselle Knowles). Persons of French and Spanish descent in New Orleans and St. Louis began referring to themselves as Creoles after the Louisiana Purchase to set themselves apart from the Anglo-Americans who moved into the area. Louisiana Creoles of color were different and separate from other populations. This is just classifying Louisiana Creoles, not the other Creoles such as those of the Carribbean or Africa. That's where the Louisiana Creole cuisine combined of - French, African (West), Native American (thanks to them giving us file which is what we use for the gumbo as I'm sure you already know), and even some slight Spanish influence but mostly African influenced. When people say Creoles of color, it typically means mixed race Creoles versus black Creoles. In Africa (where part my family are literally from), African born people refer to blacks in America as colored people, not African American nor black American. Colored because they believe many if not most blacks who derived in America as slaves after years on white conquered have MIXED in with whites thus being colored (like a rainbow) instead of black like they, the African, is.

The easiest way to put it is, much like Latinos/hispanics -

There are black latinos, yeah. There are white latinos. There are also MESTIZOS (mixed race) latinos. Think of it like that when it comes to Creoles.
