I copied most of this from an external forum. I'm curious to have input from African Americans and native, black Africans.

African Americans

A specific group of black people in the United States that has renamed themselves African Americans, i.e., people who are specifically descended from Africans brought to the USA regions of the Americas and nowhere else; some of these people were slaves and some were free men and free women during slavery in the USA, but they are all African Americans. The term was coined by Jesse Jackson. Even in the African American community, there is much debate on the word, but one thing that all African Americans agree upon is that their African ancestors (in the United States) were thrown together on a boat and on plantations in the United States. Former African enemies from different tribes, regions and countries from Africa was now forced to live side by side; they're native languages (specific to the region and tribe of Africa) were forbidden by United States law--this is why no African American passed down African cultures or languages in the United States--it wasn't by choice but by law that forbid them to do so. Over the many centuries of slavery, in the United States, descendants of former enemies from the African continent (mostly West Africa) were given permission to marry and have kids; being denied by law their rights to pass down their parent's African cultures and lineages, they lost their identity as a Mandi, a Fulani, an Igbo, a Hausa, a Yoruba, an Ashanti or any other ethnicity that still give a Native African pride in boasting to others about his or her ethnicity and culture.

Everyone knows that African Americans also have European admixtures too; there are a few families that have Native American admixtures, but most African Americans have a great love for the Africans that endured great suffering in the USA, and they'll never allow anyone from Africa, Europe or any place on earth to force them to stop proudly reminding the world that they are a people descended from many tribes and countries of Africa (mainly Western Africa).

This is how one African American put it:

We are no longer different; we are no longer enemies; we are no longer one ethnic group but many. Now, we embrace all of Africa, whether it be North, East, West, Central or Southern Africa, because we are a medley of African ethnicities and we have no desire to choose between them. We love all Africans and we want to be considered as the American (USA) equivalent to any and all Africans that are native to the continent of Africa.

In South Africa, Colored are not Black; they are not White; they are not Indian; they remain what the Apartheid government named them--that is Colored. There are four major categories--White (includes Afrikaners and British or any person of European descent), Black (includes Zulus and other black tribes), Indians/Asian (this group will have Chinese that came to South Africa after the Aparthied era and Indians or any other group descended from East and South Asia; lastly, they have a group that is unlike any other group on earth--they are the Coloreds; these people are mixed in various ways--there are no two families (known as Colored) who are ethnically mixed the same. Some Coloreds are ethnically mixed with Native Xhosa (these people are known for speaking with that clicking sound) and Dutch (Afrikaner) descent; some are mixed with Xhosa and South East Indian; some are ethnically mixed with Chinese, Indian, Xhosa and Dutch--no two colored families are the same. In South Africa, you only belong to the Colored ethnic group if both of your parents are Colored (of mixed ancestry).

Now that I've shared this topic in this forum, I want to see what black South Africans and other Black groups from Africa and the United States have to say about the differences or similarities between the two groups. So, what say you all?
