not sure what part of the country you are in but moisture is always good. Train it also i used to brush mine 100 x's a day, the way i was taught and its mid back now. i had hair almost to my rear when i was ten and my mom put a damn california curl in it and it broke off ofcourse. As i turned a teen i used to shave off the back like salt and pepa (dont laugh)im oldschool im almost all the same length. try not to use too much heat, color, things of this nature to dry out. that should be good start good luck and welcom:)

Do you still perm your hair? If so, that would be the first thing to stop. It makes the hair so fragile. And heat appliances make it worse too. Try a roller set and/or use ceramic flat irons, blowdryers, etc. They are less damaging.

And try wearing your hair natural. It grows like a weed when you just wash it and put some product in it and let it air dry.

Do you still have a perm? I went natural two years ago, and my hair grows super fast; hardly any breakage, because its stronger. Chemicals weaken the hair which causes breakage. I used to have a relaxer and my hair was at the middle of my back with the relaxer, but over time, my hair started to thin and wouldn't grow as fast as it used to. Now that I am natural, I have no problem with thickness and fast growth.

Those chemicals took out your hair. I don't know why black women don't realize those relaxers are harmful to your hair.

Just shampoo twice a week or whenever necessary (I shampoo my hair multiple times per week) and condition your hair after every wash. Use moisturizing lotion. I've been natural for over 7 months and my hair is growing fine, but I just cut most of it off.

If you use chemicals in your hair now.. stop using them. Perms, Relaxers and so on. Wear braids, or some other natural hair style for about a year or so. You will start to notice the difference with your hair. I use to wear braids on and off when growing up but I was at the same time still wearing relaxers in my hair. I also was using too much heating products that cause more damage to my hair. I stop relaxing my hair in 2003 & continued wearing braids extensions and my hair was shoulder length at the time and now it is all the way down near my rear end and most of my hair is now longer than the braid extensions so I have to twist my natural hair around it. Also found some natural hair products that works for your hair type. Check out the black hair care forum on the web. It has very useful information.

A curl!!!!

I thought thoes things were safe.
So brushing and moisturing should do the tip...writing these tips down.
I told a co worker that I want long hair and she laughed saying that blacks like us can't grow hair. But I walked off because my hair used to be long so I know its possible.
But sorry about that curl that was a real shock to me I thought it would help so thanks for spearing me before I bought it.

Am going to stop perming because I did stop for a period of time and my hair did grow but I thought it was a product I was using and when I ran out I went back to perming so now I know it was because of me going natural based on these posts.
But its so hard my mom and my nana see me and beg me to perm my hair so I do give in but my hair is ok style wise but they wanted my hair permed bad.

But then again there hair has been short for years so am done with perms.
But wow that is amazing your hair reached way down. Your a real hair role model am very impressed.

I would take a multivitamin everyday. Sleep with a satin scarf ( the pillowcases rob your hair of moisture)

Air dry your hair, use alot of moisture and the satin scarf works also. Try not using to many chemicals. People think relaxers are safe but it is just as bad. When your scaple gets burn to much, it slows process of hair growing. And relaxers can also give you brain cancer. Try using only one thing on your hair. black girls tend to change produts every week. My hairs now down to my back, when i go places people keep asking if that real ot fake. They act like black people cant have long hair. Yes we can have long hair we just dont give our hair the chance to grow.

Also since i hear that relaxers can give you brian cancer. depends on how many times you burn your scalp. I'm thinking about going natural but i do not want to cut my hair off. Anyone know any other way to go about that without cutting the hair.

Try some oils from tea tree, chamomile, peppermint, shea nuts and catnip... those are good for hair. Also, take beta carotene, zinc, vitamin E and A and some of the Bs (I'd just go with B-50 complex myself).

Avoid all that heat stuff like everyone says. And perms.*shudders* Never going through that shit again.

So far everyone that has spoken has given the remedies...I can add to the relaxer bit what I've learned from a hair dresser. The No Lye relaxers may not have Lye in them but it does have Calcium in it. That's why when it gets washed out there is still that odd feeling to your hair...so if you do use relaxers get them done professionally so that you get the safest form of relazer...one without the lye or the extra calcium. My hair used to be halfway down my back too. I'm working at it slowly but surely.
