Afghanistan is the long war; even the Democratic National Platform keeps troops their until after 2014.

Republican and Democrat goals differ, the democrats have, "set[] the clear goal of defeating al-Qaeda and denying it an ability to reestablish a safe haven in Afghanistan" while the Republican's goal is to stay until Afghanistan can protect itself from the Taliban.
