Why don't Black Americans take education seriously?

will never understand why some Black Americans can allow mediocity. I remember growing up I was always called an oreo or white acting because I spoke properly and always did well in school. My dad is Caribbean and my mom is a Black American. Education is very important to them. Almost everyone in my Mom's family has a Bachelors Degree or higher. My Jamaican grandma used to hit me and my brothers with a switch if we spoke improperly. It seems like Black Americans are content with staying where they are and they make excuses for it. This girl at my job was like,"there ain't barely any rich Black people expect Oprah, Basketball players and those rappers." I was like, there are many wealthy Black Americans. My moms family is pretty well off.It bothered me that people always thought I was foreign because I wasn't like "most Black people". Why is acting ghetto, thuggish, and speaking poorly considered to be "black"? While speaking the King's English, getting an education is considered being White? Black Americans take many things for granted. Their ancestors the slaves had risked death and touture if they were caught reading and learning. Africans and Caribbeans and other immigrants come from huts and poverty, ethinic genocide and warfare and they still come to this country and become sucessful.Black Americans have greater oppurnities and resources in the year 2011 than most children in Africa and Asia, yet many Black Americans still complain about "racism" and I can't do this because I'm Black and how hard it is in the ghetto. American ghettos are considered nice compared to the barrios in Latin America, the favela is Brazil, and the slums in Africa and Asia. Black Americans never had to deal with someone kicking them out of their home because they were apart of a certain tribe or religion, never had their hands chopped off. Black Americans are very lucky.

A lot of black Americans hate white people. They view obtaining an education, and doing well in school as "acting white." "Acting white" is the bane of these people's existence. Not all black Americans do this, but many do. I know this from first hand experience, too. I always attended mixed race schools. Whenever a black student was in advanced classes, they would get harassed by many other black students for "acting white." This was not an uncommon phenomenon, and anyone who goes to a school that has a large black population, like at least 25% black, can tell you this is true.

I find it disturbing that I went and looked for topics about education and the only one exceeding 500 posts was another one involving the black man vs black women trend on topix.

Maybe ill look up the word college and see better results. The key to a good future is a good education. Don't deny them that future by ignoring the issue. Encourage your child to get no less than an 80 on their tests. Stop accepting near failing or failing grades.

We need a correction here!

Revising the question.

Why don't<<<<<SOME >>>>> Black Americans take education seriously?

Ahhhhhhhh, that's much better.

Blacks are NOT monolithic.

A new generation of the "permanent underclass", is simply walking in the footsteps of their predecessors that didn't care about an education either. The cycle continues.........

Why do people care more about Kim Kardashian and what ethnicity a person prefers to date / marry than one of the roots of the problems in our community ?

Is Kim going to be paying you anything?

How can we make doing well in school not seem like a bad thing? How can we raise test scores? Are our children taking prep classes for the SAT ? Are you willing to invest money for those classes or at least the books? The books are only around 50$... less than the cost of the average pair of shoes worn these days.

Why do some children feel the need to stop out or give up in high school ? How can we give them a better education starting with elementary schools ?

Does anyone care? Then you'll all go on to complain that there aren't enough black men in college... though you haven't looked at what has been going on since high school and elementary school. Doing well is something people should strive for. Less than an 80 on exams shouldn't be tolerated.

Why don't we encourage more students to attend honor and AP.courses. Having them take AP courses in high school is cheaper than having them take the course in college.

O.o... Sorry for any typos. I'm on my phone.

This is a serious question that I wish the so-called black leaders need to pay attention to. Other races seem to go all out to ensure their own are as educated as can be. In the black community however, standards remain really low. Where is Jesse Jackson, etc, to speak on this scourge? Why does the education problem in the black community not get as much attention?

We can ...and more will, take it seriously when we know IT DOES WORK for black men alike. Society will always exagerate because education actually worked for a few blacks. I know tons of blacks who have followed all of the rules only to get disappointed after college.
I have earned TWO degrees in both IT support and business and management 3.3 gpa. Also ex-military.Still unemployed as there seems to be a lingering lack of opportunities down south....yeah right.
We simply need more black people involved in the job hiring process.
It's sad that everyone knows this problem exists in america... yet resources are directed towards everything else except improving "black male employment"

In the hood, being dumb is cool! If a black kid speaks proper English he makes the dummies feel bad, and may set beat up!

Coons fail to see the long term benefits of higher education like attaining successful careers & all the perks that come with pride in self through dedication & a strong work ethic, they believe in street education for fast buck enterprises like hustling stolen contraband, selling dope, convenience store robberies, strong arm hold ups, car jackings & home invasions.

No correction needed! Nothing is absolute! Only an idiot would believe that "all" people do this and "all"people do that! I NEVER correct people on that!

So does the poor white trailer trash!

It works both ways!

Negroes say, the hell with the white man's education, the poor white trash say, I'm white, and that's good enough, I don't need an education.

I value an education but its becomung increasingly hard to apply them in real life. There are endless types if educations outside of formal let's not be closed minded.
