You're story is no different than when AAs go to Ghana or South Africa expecting to embraced by their own.<quoted text>
I have lived in Atlanta for more than 10 years, with an occassional foray into places like Pennslyvania , South Carolina, etc. I am not here to say all AA's are bad. No. But I have been so hurt by the stupid, mindless ones that I come across in my profesional career that at this point, I am no longer scouting for good AAs.I know there are a lot of good, God-fearing, intelligent AAs out there but that part of the adventure of finding good people in the AA community, for me, is dead.
It is at work that I and AAs collide in the most vicious of ways.
I will tell you a story--2 in fact.
When I first moved here, me being a naive African, I found myself gravitating towards Black neighborhoods in the mistaken belief I will be among "my own people". Long story short, it got so bad that I never took a seat when riding the subway because there always was some skanky, loud-mouth who can't mind his own business. You take a seat and they start talking to you about Football. You politely tell them you don't follow football and that's the beginning of the nightmare. "Ah, so you from Africa?". "I have heard that you people don't drink milk?" And it goes on and on and on....
After working for a certain company for 5 years, I felt it was within my right to apply for a higher position in the Company. My application was successful and although I was not specifically a supervisor, I was handed a list of names of people who would fill in for me whenever I was away.It so happened that I needed to take a day off and so I approached one of my designated substitute co-workers.She fiercely resisted being told by me to fill in for me. I reminded her that I ddin't make the decison to be a sustitute and that she also was given the list but it seemed this had been rankling with her for a long time and she was just waiting for a day like this.
One lasting quote from her was, "Why should I led by him, not the other way round?". And this, in front of OUR Manager. The co-worker wasn't reprimanded or anything and another replacement was duly found.
So I am done.Finito!!
Everyone has stories, geez.
