Will Supreme Court Voter ID Decision Disenfranchise (Black, poor & elderly) Voters?
League of Women Voters President May G. Wilson called the policy requiring voters to show a government-issued photo ID “a bad decision for democracy” and a “concerted effort to disenfranchise legal voters.” Civil rights groups suggest that the Court’s decision, coming on the eve of a presidential election and Indiana’s primary, in which an African American is a serious contender, has partisan overtones and intent. President John Payton of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund charged: “Without doubt, thousands of otherwise eligible African Americans and other minority voters who would have wanted to participate in what is perhaps the most historic election in our lifetime will not be able to vote under mandatory voter ID requirements.” AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, who also sits on the Democratic National Committee, called laws like Indiana’s “a cynical attempt to suppress turnout among groups who tend to vote for candidates who prioritize working families’ issues, including lower-income Americans and people of color.”

What are the requirements? Is it more than just going to your local DMV, getting your pic taken and paying a fee? That to me isn't too harsh but stupid especially if you've voted in the past without a photo ID. Hell if its that simple just do it- don't let them (the gov't) hold you back from making your vote- Just Vote! Kinda sounds like you have to pay to vote. Enlighten me, what is the real reason the gov't is trying to pull this move? |

Another attack on Democracy disguised as protecting the American people. The Republicans know this will disenfranchise tens of thousands of poor, Black and elderly voters. Voters who would potentially vote democratic.
We must remember, this Supreme Court is largely made up of Bush 41 appointed judges. Those same judges GAVE Bush 43 the presidency. At the very point that Blacks have an opportunity to vote for a Black man to be President of the United States, the rules are changed. This is not without historical context. This is reminiscent of Reconstruction when Blacks were in government and doing for self. Then came the change in laws and the Knight Riders (KKK). Minister Farrakhan wrote, "The period of time right after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation was called the Reconstruction era, wherein Black people made tremendous progress. The whole idea in that period—from those who benefited from our enslavement—was to put our people back into slavery and to drive deeper into our hearts the fear that was in us during our 300 years of chattel slavery. In the 12-year period from 1865 to 1877, the enemy could see that if the so-called Negro was set free and given the material to build an independent existence, he could become a serious challenge to White superiority." "If" America is to survive, White supremacy must die. |

"The other argument I’ve heard against voter ID legislation is that it’s discriminatory in that certain people can’t get the cards. This point, I will concede. There are certain people who would not be able to obtain voter ID cards because of their citizenship status. Non-citizens (aka: illegal aliens) would not be able to get the ID cards and there is no problem, whatsoever, with that. The language of the U.S. Constitution reads,“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied…” Please note the use of the word citizen: all citizens may vote, not just anyone who happens to be in this country on an election day." Don't seem much like a big deal to me |

Saw it on the boards...
"Look at all the money being spent on the "Get out the Vote" campaigns, if people are worried about the poor and homebound being unable to get an ID, why not use some ot the resources from the "Get out the Vote" campaign and redirect it to a "Get your Voter ID" campaign? There are currently groups that pick up voters each election and give them rides to the polls so they can vote. Could this not be done with getting an ID as well? The ID's are offered free to people who could not afford them, and who really in todays society can get by without a Photo ID of some sort. The answer is the LIbErals don't want photo ID because it would make commiting vote fraud more difficult. The "get out the vote" campaigns would no longer be effective means of packing the voter registration rolls with phony names so fraudlent votes can be cast. They argue that people might be disenfranchised if forced to show an id, but don't seem to care that with every fraudulent vote that a legitimate voter in the state has their vote negated by each fraudulent vote cast. They ARE actually being disenfranchised, there is no hypothetical there. The real issue is this: * The liberals want to keep vote fraud as a tool that they can use to help elect their candidates and promote their adgenda. * The conservatives want to elimate vote fraud so that the elections are kept fair. Conservatives want all people to be able to vote in each election, they just want to limit their votes to one." ...your thoughts? |

Why do some always assume blacks are dumb, stupid and disfranchised?
Why? How does this rule effect blacks anymore than white? |

1 As for old people, they're the most powerful political group there is because THEY ALL VOTE. Don't even pretend that someone who is a senior citizen hasn't found time to get a drivers license especially when we are constantly bombarded with stories about seniors refusing to give up their licenses and "right" to drive. |

1 that the Indiana law passed with bipartisan support. Check your conspiracy theories and pandering to blacks and poor people at the door. Just a question or two for those who find such a law so threatening. If you haven't a verifying ID, how do you get a legitimate job? Virtually any reputable company or business is required to verify ID and proof of citizenship. Without a proper ID available, how does the polling place know if you are qualified to vote in that district, ward, or whatever? It may not matter which polling place you choose to vote for the President of the United States, but there are other races and measures on the ballot for which you are unqualified due to where you live. |
