Yes, but I do understand why you asked that question since the majority of black women in the US use relaxers. Afro hair tends to look short but that is because of the shrinkage factor. When you stretch it, you will see that it is sometimes double or triple the length that it appears to be.

Can ya'll leave black women alone with this bullshit about light skin/dark skin, can black women grow long hair. OF COURSE THEY CAN!!! When black women's hair get wet witout using chemicals, it SHRINKS, but when you stretch it, IT'S LONGER!!!! It's the same when a person has curly hair. It appears short because of the curls, but when that person blow dries it or straight it, it's longer, so yes black women CAN grow long hair PAST THEIR SHOULDERS!!!!!

I do. No extensions, both of my parents are pure black.

Absolultely, when we were growing up, I was raised w/the mentality like alot of people in my generation were, and that was to relax my hair. I realized that I never even knew how to care properly for my chemically processed hair, which of course, breaks off from dryness and excess combing. But, I had two cousins whose mother REFUSED to relax, even though people felt that you absolutely should, and they have the coarsest hair that I have ever seen, they got their hair pressed every two weeks and it was past the middle of their backs. One of them still has really long hair, and the other decided to relax her hair, and it is now just 2 inches past her shoulders.

I don't wear weaves, so I will answer your question based on what I think. It can be one of three things: 1) A different look 2) Covers their insecurity about their natural hair 3) Want longer hair or a style that requires a certain length of hair they don't have. I can't really think of any other reasons as to why black girls/women wear weaves.

I'm somalian and my hair is down to the small of my back, lol. Of course black people can grow out their hair! It's the curly factor; hair looks shorter than it actually is. It's common sense. My hair isn't very curly though, mostly just wavy, but I have many AA friends and their hair can be long if they stopped using relaxers and the like.

Yes, but only in on-line forums. In on-line forums, every black woman has straight silky hair down to her ass. Out in the real world, though, every black girl has a short, unruly, nappy mess on her head unless she uses chemicals.
I ain't claiming to be no Crystal Gale or whatever her name is, and it might be true that black hair takes longer to grow out then white or asian hair. But since I started using my ceramic flat iron, I got my hair almost reaching my bra strap, and that is from using it for just a little over a year. Black women who take care of their hair are rewarded with silky long hair like every other woman.

Of course they can, but most choose not too. ost black people who don't use chemicals on their hair can grow it long. Have you ever seen people who wear dreds, some go down to their back.
But long hair is time consuming, I grew mine long when that was the style but short hair is in for men and the ladies like the weave. But Blacks can grow long hair when they want too.

I knew how to take care of my hair in a perm, and wore my hair below my shoulders. I like how i look with it cut short too. My skin can't take the torture anymore. And it is low maintenance and healthy.

Some people wear weaves to give their own hair a break.

I grew out my hair past my shoulders, it was probably to the middle of my back. I just recently cut my hair to my shoulders because my hair was not growing back evenly and one side was thinner than the other. Do you guys have any suggestions on how I can fix my damn hair. I use a lot of heat and of course there is breakage. Please help!!
