Black British and African Americans are both black. Black British just have a British accent.

For people who don't understand, "British" is a nationality that incorporates many different races. It harks back to the days of colonisation (including slavery systems used in the Carribean and some coastal areas of West Africa) and that is why there are Overseas British territories: essentially parts of the UK, in Africa (Saint Helena), the Americas (Falklands, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands etc), Europe (Gibraltar) and Pacific (Pitcairn Is), as well as the entity of the Commonwealth of Nations (Previous colonies: from Australia to Ghana ). These people are either British OR have the immediate right of dual-citizenship regardless of their race or country of birth. There are also all the long inhabiting ethnic groups of the British isles and Northern Ireland (the Welsh and Cornish (the oldest inhabitants of Britain), English (and all the subgroups; Scouse, Brummie, Yorkshire, Geordie etc), Scottish (that includes Scots, Gaelics, Orkney and Shetlanders), Irish (regardless of religion), Manx, Jerresais, Guernesais, Sarcquais, Romanichal, Pavee...

Then there are the British who naturalised over one to several generations. These are people who have origins in the old colonial empire and were also subjects to the Crown (which explains Carribbean and African British people or people who ultimately trace their family's ancestry to these places, who were either taken to the UK as slaves and indentured labourers 3-200 years ago and were emancipated here (Spice Girl Mel B is descended from this first group of Britons of African descent), or were invited over to the UK to work in specific industries after the devastation of WW2 and the start of the Cold War ie the Windrush and other mass migrations until the end of the 70s). Many young black Britons are 3 generations British born, are integrated into their local communities and identify as British, and a small minority within the minority have ancestors who have been in this country since the 1700s.. For AAs to say that Black Britons have no idea or recollection of slavery is erroneous at best, I think those who claim that easily forget that the Caribbean was nothing more than a huge plantation for the UK during the slavery period, and so a good amount of Black Britons today also descend from slaves. What AAs have done and what BBs have done is totally down to the very different nature of the way history went, not to mention society and politics, in both countries..

Anyway, to continue with the British thing, within the last 3 decades many other people from anywhere between the Philippines to Venezuela who have a skill they could benefit the country with and who want to become naturalised British citizens could, just like their migrant counterparts in the USA France South Africa or Canada, become British on giving up their previous citizenship/nationality. In this case they became known as Filipino-British or Venezuelan-British citizens. There are also non-British people living in Britain, who are essentially migrants or refugees who did not or do not want to take up British citizenship. So there is a difference between a Black-Brit and a Congolese person living in Britain due to that very definition. Or a Chinese citizen living in Britain vs a Chinese-Brit.

Britain is a very complex country ethnically, yet a simple one nationality-wise, so clear your misconceptions. There's a lot of subjective crap going around on here and I thought I make it clear how the system of "who is British and who isn't" works in this country. Americans and Brits would do well to read and learn the things I've written in here to stop a lot of the BS I started reading earlier from ever happening again.

Im Black and 66, born in America and I'd have to actually see you to make certain this isn't ".Mutton dressed as Lamb". But if you are also Black, here is my perspective ( http://www.josegreco.com ) of our people of the Diaspora; Whites in Canada,Britain, USA ect. regard us as "their Blacks", and when they kill Steven Lawrence or Trayvon Martin, they are destroying their property, in the UK I might reffer to our people as Nigerian, "from the Islands" and so on. Whites house us in the Estates in Britain, the Ghetto or Projects in America, and our upward mobility is always blocked by detours, glass ceilings, and impossible asentions.

Doesn't mean we Black people can't progress, it does mean its relative to the intetests of Whites in charge, and a rich Micheal Jordon is considered inferior to a wealthy White team owner. The history of Blacks throughout the World is very impressive, if we Blacks learn, appreciate, and celebrate our collective sucesses, we are less apt to judge our people by the double standards Whites (and sometimes us )use against us.

Well thats funny because I am a 2nd Generation BLACK BRITISH (on my passport) living in the uk, with Jamaican parent/Grandparents. &I am much closer to my spanish ancestery than I am to African.
But if it makes you feel better, they call the Caribbean community in the uk 'Afro-Caribbean' sometimes

I really feel a sadness when I see black Americans acting wrong. I feel like they are long lost cousins to me. So many talented, brave , courageous and hard working men and women cultivated the land. I do have respect for their struggle. They stand where blacks elsewhere would not and I appreciate that , some of the toughest and strong willed are out there. So many black immigrants from Africa , caribbean , Europe want to be in America , just so they can progress like many successful blacks that are there, doing well for themselves. It makes me feel proud that the blacks reached such heights , when they suffered so much creulity in the past. Black all over the world needs to pick itself up , help each other and love each other!

If you are born in Britain you are British. Many great black brits fight in the British army for our country, fly in the Air Force, are fantastic scientists and teachers, they win Olympic medals for team Britain, they contribute to our music and movies and popular modern culture, so yes they are British, and I would fight for them as much as I would for any other Brit. We are all brothers living in the greatest country in the world

I concur, but black people in America or Britain aren't indigenous to these areas hence the reason why some may be upset in this thread.

Im african american and Nigerian & when I go to Europe to visit my family i notice that most europeans are very rude and ignorant also. Some African Americans can be very rude and ignorant especially the inner city ones.

I grew up n a mixed suburban area & the African Americans who lived their where very intelligent & yes some white Americans are very very very racist, because one of my teachers n high-school was extremely upset.

She did not like one of the black girls their & i think that she did not like her, because she ranked in the top ten in the hole school district. My white teacher really disliked her maybe because she was even smarter then her.

The girl was beautiful she was really dark-skin with long natural hair. She looked like Lauryn Hill in the Ex-Factor music video her boyfriend was this cute asian guy that all the white girls liked.

The white people hated her because she was beautiful and she was way smarter then they where & the black people hated her, because she rarely talk to them and they called her a sellout and uncle tom...

Because her close friends where Indian, asian and she hung out with a few white girls too. Her cousin was the total opposite she was beautiful too, but she only dated black men & hung around black people plus she was loud.

Shockingly they where very close though. Maybe because they where family.
All of my visits and living there for months at a time with my family in Europe were heavenly. Europeans were more than kind.

I pray your next visit will be uplifting.
