Essay: African and Afro-descendant Women in Mexico City during the Colonial Period
Written by Maria Elisa Velázquez Gutierrez PH
Translated by Wiley G. Barnett

If little is known about the presence of Africans in Mexico, less is known about the participation of Mandinga, Wolof, or Bantu women, among the many groups of African women who arrived in Mexico and whose participation was decisive for the economic, social, and cultural development of the country. It is calculated that around 250,000 Africans were introduced to New Spain, of which about 80,000 were women. This figure does not include those who entered as contraband or the Creoles, that is, those born in Mexican territory.

Numbers revealed by researchers of this topic demonstrate that in the second half of the sixteenth century and the first decades of the seventeenth, Mexico was the Hispanic country that received the largest number of Africans.
The African women and their descendants played a decisive role in the construction of Mexican society.

Many of them worked in the farms of the times, in particular the sugar plantations that proliferated in states such as Morelos and Veracruz, cutting sugar cane, piling up the sugar cane, and doing other field labor. Their insertion in the regional economy, while barely recognized by the historiography, was relevant, and it is demonstrated by Adriana Nevada, whose research highlights that the men and women slaves of the sugar ranches represented 30 percent of the invested capital in these units of production at the beginning of the eighteenth century.

In the cities these women occupied jobs as housekeepers, cooks, and wet nurses, functions intimately linked with the everyday lives of the people who hired them, mostly Spaniards and Creoles. Many African women and Afro-descendants were in charge of raising the children of their masters, creating relationships of affection and recognition. For the most part, the Afro-descendants, once free, worked in the cities of New Spain, carrying out different tasks.

Many of them were merchants of different products in permanent and temporary markets known as “tianguis” in Mexico. Others worked as cooks and were in charge of “public dining rooms.”Others worked as healers, midwives, or in manufacturing, many times serving sentences imposed by the Inquisition.

And lastly some worked as auxiliaries working with pottery, tailoring, and shoe making. Some of them were able to obtain jobs as teachers and others had access to economic conditions that were to a certain extent advantageous in relationship to other sectors, mostly through marriage....

Mexico had taken about 1 in slave for every 3 America took.

However the U.S also has 3 people for every 1 person in Mexico.

So where did all of these Black slaves Mexico took go?

They obviously mixed into the population or died.

in the usa slavery was only in the south...however that meant only a couple of states where slavery was allowed because whites DID NOT venture into the continent only until 1803 or 1805 with the lewis and clark expedition...meaning that left only 55 years of slavery LEFT... where did all these blacks in the americas come from...the real answer is that most of us were already here labeled as free persons of color or indians. Mexico was filled with blacks until cortez murdered them..yes the azteks were the same ethnic group mandINKA and fulani that were in spain. yes la malinche is malinke..the fulani pronounciation of mandinka. yes the Mande-INCA or inca as they code it were the mandinkas in south america when the spanish invaded.

if you invest time in the records of montezuma meeting with cortes.....all accounts say montezuma tells the spaniards his people are foreigners of mexico and many others but specifically his elders tells of them coming from where the sunrises..and this is on the east coast of mexico..where else can you go where the sun rises on the coast of eastern side of mexico..aztecs weren't white and THE SPANISH called the aztecs black, moorish, moorish architecture, african police system, etc etc...edited versions of those accounts uses moorish instead of negro... spanish reported seeing barbershops and bathhouses also...along side with mosque...

Dare to post the letters of cortes and duran on this page...im not making this up check it out for yourself. understand also that mali sent out a famous king on an expedition thru the atlantic ocean...the same time the first aztec colony was said to have been established...DO you want to know the name of this aztec colony..well imma tell you anyway... it was named malinalco...mali-nalco. WHAT WAS ENGLANDS FIRST COLONY NEW ENGLAND

I work with some, they have huge afros. I can always spot them. Many told me they had a great grandparent who was black. They are typically darker than the the lighter mexicans. Some have a lot of black in them, to the point the women dont even grow their hair out. Some look just like AA's.

Mexico’s First Black President

By Ted Vincent Special to the Planet

Wednesday February 18, 2009 - 06:17:00 PM

Barak Obama admires Abraham Lincoln. Vicente Guerrero, Mexico’s first black president, was his nation’s Lincoln. In 1829 he issued Mexico’s slavery abolition decree (which led a few years later to Texas slave holders taking Texas out of Mexico).

Obama and Lincoln are known for building coalitions. Guerrero built one when he was commander-in-chief of the Mexican army during the last three years of Mexico’s exhaustive 1810-1821 war for independence from Spain. Key actions by Guerrero to end the war were his spread of letters to Mexican officers who had been hired to fight for Spain. He convinced many that opportunity awaited if they switched sides. His subsequent team of rivals brought victory and made Guerrero Mexico’s Washington as well as Lincoln—he also created the basic design for the flag...

The original of Guerrero’s address to congress reads,“If we succeed in protecting the rights of the individual, if equality under the law destroys the forces of power and money, if the primary title we use amongst ourselves is that of ‘citizen,’ if rewards are given exclusively for talent and virtue, then we have a republic, and it will be preserved through the universal suffrage of a solidly free and content people.”
