The Romans didn't think of “races”. They thought the blond northerners were as diffferent from them as the black Ethiopians.
I disagree. They may have had names for everyone, but they named all black people, regardless of Nation, "Ethiopians," clearly showing that they saw them as some type of race.

The word Ethiopian comes from the Greek, who referred to the Nubian population south of Egypt.
The Romans had not our conception of race. They were aware of physical differences, but didn't conceive of such differences as indicating different races. Black Moroccans were not called Ethiopian. Nor were Black Egyptians.

Sir,

emperorjohn was correct about the universal use in Medieval Europe of "Ethiopian" or "Ethiop" for any Black person even without any connection with Abyssinia/Ethiopia or Nubia. It was the generic word for Black Africans.
You also had the word "Moors" which is more complex mixing up people frankly Black and others brown (various shades) and others rather white, all of them being put together as Muslims.

The brilliant exhibition at The Walters Museum is providing some illustrations of that. i just got finally the catalogue : it is really worth its 25$. Make sure you get a copy sir.

The word Ethiopian means sun burnt and refers to any black person. They even used for Indians at times. But when the Greeks and Roman sbegan to know more about Indians and Africans, they began to use the term solely for Africans.

They knew nothing about them. They were dark and superficially similar, so they lumped them together. The Romans made no distinction between enslaving one of these “Ethiopians” and any European “barbarian”.

Herodotus used the term even for Indians, who were not Africans at all but simply dark in color.

The language of racism was used by the Romans against any enemy. They maligned the Gauls and Britons in scathing terms, the same terms echoed over the centuries by imperialists wishing to demean their victims.

By Euroimperialist slavers against Africans. By Euro settlers against Native Americans. By the English against the Scots and Irish. By the Norse against the Sammi.

Primitive, barbarian, uncivilized, nonintellectual, governed by emotions, cruel, violent, given to addiction, animalistic, uncouth... etc., etc. Reading those words we can't tell who is talking about whom.

“Race” does not exist in any real scientific sense. Racism does, as a social disease.

Eventually, the word "Ethiopian" was dropped as a term for people from India and used exclusively for Black Africans.

I recall that in Herodotus' HISTORIES he referred to Indians as "eastern Ethiopians.' He notes that they were as black as "western Ethiopians" (Africans south of Egypt), but had straight rather than tightly curled hair.
In fact, when I read Roman writers comments on people of northern and central Europe--probably ancestors of most white Americans--it appears that they thought of much of Europe as modern Westerners would later think of Africa: a dark or primitive region occupied by savages. Cicero talks about Celtic Britions the way Carlyle talks about Black Africans. Also, many of the negative attributes later imputed to Africans were also attributed to lower class Europeans (slaves, serfs, etc). Only in America these attributes became racialized with color as the symbolic marker of racial membership.

I gather from this that you've virtually no knowledge of political ideas or philosophies. I mentioned the soaical anarachists with their idea of a cooperative society and direct democracy, stating that they could certainly not be Communists--at least not in the sense that you understand it. And you ask whether I mean Cuba and then give me irrlevant quotations from Winston Churchill.
Anarchists believe in "communism" in the sense of a communal society, and a STATELESS society.
Since you don't read much, you might at least have googled "social anarchism" or even "libertarian socialism." Perhaps then your reply might have been relevant
I have no knowledge of politics or philosophy?

Ok, let me ask you genius.

Where is "social anarchism" and "direct democracy" today? Libya? Egypt? France? Belgium? Anywhere in South America, Africa, or Asia?
Anywhere?

Try Nowhere!

Why? Because, for any political or social idea as you put it to survive. The propagators of that idea must ultimately have order to fill the vacuum left by anarchy itself after any real movement has toppled a regime of any kind.

The people you speak of are a joke and would certainly have to institute some sort of secret police in the end to keep such an idea afloat and not be taken over by those who would die for their beliefs, like muslims and jihad.

This is not about your right to party.

I live in the real world and what you are talking about is silly in the light of reality and the real human condition with all it's evil pride, jealousy, envy, lust for power and corruption.

Churchill was correct about socialism in all it's forms. A dictator will always arise out of the midst of socialist movements to bring about order out of chaos.

And when they do?

"Dictators ride to and fro upon tigers which they dare not dismount. And the tigers are getting hungry."

And here are some more Churchill truth telling about socialism:

"If I were asked the difference between Socialism and Communism, I could only reply that the Socialist tries to lead us to disaster by foolish words and the Communist could try to drive us there by violent deeds."

"Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the State."

"No socialist system can be established without a political police."

"Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy."

"It is not alone that property, in all its forms, is struck at, but that liberty, in all its forms, is challenged by the fundamental conceptions of socialism."

"'All men are created equal' says the American Declaration of Independence.'All men shall be kept equal' say the Socialists."

"Some see private enterprise as a predatory animal to be shot, others look on it as a cow to be milked but a few see it as a sturdy horse pulling a wagon."

"If you destroy a free market, you create a black market."

"The vice of capitalism is that it stands for the unequal sharing of blessings; whereas the virtue of socialism is that it stands for the equal sharing of misery."

"Socialism assails the pre-eminence of the individual."

"Is it better to have equality at the price of poverty or well-being at the price of inequality?"

"The flame of Christian ethics is still our best guide...only on this basis can we reconcile the rights of the individual with the demands of society."
