I’m Not Black ... I'm Bi-Racial, Damn It! (Video)

There are 152 comments on the eurthisnthat.com story from Jul 22, 2009, titled I’m Not Black ... I'm Bi-Racial, Damn It! (Video). In it, eurthisnthat.com reports that:

*There is a new documentary that has surfaced and it’s called “I’m Bi-Racial ... Not Black Damn It!”

It is produced and directed by Carolyn Battle Cochrane who is exploring the world of all those living with two or more ethnicities inside their immediate family.

Now, I haven’t walked in the director’s shoes, but I kinda think she should’ve thought about that title just a little more. It screams, “I don’t like the black in me.” Which leads us back to our innate prejudice that is sometimes projected on to those we encounter, whether black or white and we sometimes make our own problems.

But hey, she even agrees that there needs to be NEW DIALOGUE on the matter. “I’m Bi-Racial ... Not Black Damn It!” seems to be quite thought provoking and mind opening

Africans have been trying to bailout of their own race by acts of interracial behavior thereby making light skinned blacks running around calling themselves as brown race and not black.

I don't like this.

At the same time i don't like the promotion that they "can't choose".

Many Americans even with blue eyes and blonde hair and even in the civil rights era *CHOSE* to identify with their black side rather than pass as white. Some of them even spied on the Klu Klux Klan for us.

This is old news...saw this video months ago. But anyway, I agree with the people in the video. They should not have to pick a race...and they should be proud of BOTH races. I think people should stop trying to make them choose.

Self hate is when you deny who you are. They are trying to embrace who they are...which is biracial...not JUST black...not JUST white...but both. I don't see any self hate there.

Who cares? They can be whatever they want.....black, white, mixed, biracial, triracial, etc. No one's forcing them to choose.

Life goes on.

Yes, I completely agree...

why should they be forced/pressured to choose one or the other. Some people should really get over that dumb arse 1 drop rule, it was not meant to compliment blacks/biracials at all but to actually DEMEAN them. When will people get this?

Today there has simply been a shift in the thinking of multi racial people, I think this started with tiger Woods' cablaisan comment. Which first bothered me, but then as I got older i felt it would have been disrespectful to his mother to ignor his asian herritage.
In the past, biraceial children, mainly black and white we accepted more by black people and therefore identified more with being black. Often whites did not accept them. That is changing with more biracial people and a change in our american culture. My wife marked other on a paper for my daughter (w/b) and I was a little upset till she said "what about me?" becaseu in the hospital they were going to put white on the birth certificate and I said, "what about me?" and changed it to biracial, but hey.

Consider this -- some prefer biracial because they'd hate being calle black, others, lighter than the girl pictured, do it because they'd hate being called white or whatever else.

I think labels shouldn't mean the world. Many of our most adament leaders have been "yellow" and of our worst sellouts brown.

Biracial people should be able to choose as well.

"A lil black n ur BLACK like it or not"

Laughable. Do a little research and learn just how many people in America have that magic "one drop." As for your wife, if she wants to base her identity on derogatory remarks or negative treatment, fair enough. But don't expect all others to follow suit.

Regarding the charge of “self-hate,” I suspect that those who frequently make this charge are the ones filled with “self-hate.”

I see envious white people are still about the whole Obama thing! Get over it. Most black-white biracial people say they're black. Everyone knows that.

A biracial child is born with two strong blood lines from two different races. It's not about choosing one side or the other because to deny one side "IS" self hate. For an example; a child that is born half white and half black, is not black or white but both! So in order for that child to grow up loving themselves they must have the freedom to express love for both sides. What often times happens is that they start to feel pressured to choose subconsciously one race or the other because of the people surrounding them. They grow up and begin to notice all of the bad stigmas that go along with being black. Most biracial people would rather not be identified as just black unless they feel rejected by the white race and some are rejected because they may come out looking to dark with kinky hair or some may have been raised a little to ghetto according to some white people and don't fit in with them socially. But it really doesn't matter, because they are not black and they are not white, they are both! So no matter what side they may prefer to gravitate toward, they don't get to choose who they are.....weather they like it or not they are both! That's what biracial is point blank period.

What if you have darkskin then what......there are plenty of biracial who are darker than men.

Examples: Sophie Okenodo(I'm not sure if I spelled her name right)-actress(Hotel Rwanda as Don Cheadles wife)

Emanuela De Paula-Victoria Secret Model

Both have white mothers but no one would ever guess that they are biracial.
