Up close you get to see how the boats are SO fast. It's amazing how they get to zip through that water.
I wished I could ride on one of those.

Are the sails also part of that Polynesian out rigger design?

Those boats are just AMAZING!

The most superior canoes came from Fiji, made by a people who are predominantly black Melanesians. These boats are directly derived from the Fijian design, the Polynesians ditched their own inferior canoe designs and adapted the Fijian design identically. Here's some information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drua

"The Fijian double canoe (wangga ndrua) was the largest and finest sea-going vessel ever designed and built by natives of Oceania before contact with europeans."

Hope that helps.

You have very little knowledge on the subject lol.

No one knows the exact cost of these boats but it has been widely reported that Silicon Valley billionaire Larry Ellison, who has bankrolled the event, has spent about $100 million. Some reports say the NZ challengers, bankrolled by the government, have spent up to $150 million.

No worries everyone makes mistakes.

"Again where ur knowledge in other melanesian boats.. Ppng, solomon islands etc"

LOL what has that got to do with anything. The fact remains The Fijians were building the biggest, fastest, superior Canoe designs out of anyone in Oceania at that time. So superior that Samoans & Tongans directly copied their design to replace their own inferior designs. Those are facts.

Are you sure white people didn't build those boats?
From what we are to believe, white people created EVERYTHING.
The racist types will take credit for ANYTHING.

However, it's interesting to learn that this boat structure and design originated in Oceana from the Fijians and Samoans.

Yes Europeans did construct these modern boats.

The design was partly sourced from the Fijian Drua Canoe. Samoans were not building huge vessels like Fijians unless they were brought to Fiji to do so.

Umm no Fijians were building the biggest, fastest vessels in Oceania before Europeans arrived.

"The Fijian double canoe (wangga ndrua) was the largest and finest sea-going vessel ever designed and built by natives of Oceania before contact with europeans."

Maori waka was much smaller and Polynesians adapted the Fijian design in replace of theirs.

This is why I like diversity. Other people are passionate about their history and can tell it.

I didn't know anything about Tonga and Fiji people warring over Samoa. They never taught us that these boats ever originated from those people. All they teach here is the Western Expansion.

Interesting.

Yes Tongan/Fijians had taken over Samoa in the past, largely due to the fact Fijians were producing the Drua canoe with which they were able to transport hundreds of warriors over vast distances.

Both the Tongans and Samoans had their own canoe designs which were much smaller and their design was inferior compared to the Fijians in terms of speed, manoeuvrability, size etc. they identically adapted Fijian Drua design in replace of their own canoes, they called their versions the Kalia(Tongan) and Alia(Samoan) and also the Tongans and Samoans never even had sufficient Timber growing on their islands to build large vessels like the Drua.
