I've heard people use the phase "pon the river" as a dancing command. Or they tell people to a groups of listeners to "pon the reply."

What does the saying "pon the river" has to do with dancing?

I think Pon can mean different things because when I look at their comments, they use it a lot and they sure don't be talking about the river in every sentence.

Well the song you're referencing has a number of dance movements that go along with it. So they're telling you to do a specific move.

Rihanna song is just saying the song is "on the replay" Nothing big. Don't make too much out of it.:)

It is a language, and the original word for it is Jamic.

yeah true, if you want to convert it's signifance into standard english, one could say it's normally used in prepositional phrases, but it's most common use is when people are saying "on" something.

I wonder if "Your Dad's Pole" would know this. I know she is from Barbados but I wonder if she uses it.

You are talking about the "pon di river, pon di bank" dance.

It's just a name for it. Kind of like how "Swing" is an American dance but the word Swing has nothing to do with dancing.

Uh, you don't have to be referencing a river to use it in the context of "on"

Put it pon = Put it on

Me deh pon = I'm on

etc...

Anytime Jamaicans use "pon", unless there is some new slang I have never heard of, it will mean "on."
