Hi all.. English is not my native language, so sorry for eventual mistakes.
I live in Europe, Portugal. Some weeks ago I decided to rent an apartment just for me (1 bedroom).
Saw some ads, called, and met the landlord of an apartment I really liked. He was a bit passive-aggressive, but the apartment was really great, so I decided to sign contract.
In the day I was moving in, he was there to give me the keys and talk, but it was awful. He was so arrogant the whole time, like he was disgusted a black would live in his apartment. He started to talk about how rich he was (house near the sea, with an interior pool and spa) giving me paternal looks, saying that if I couldn't handle the rent that I should talk with him (I will have no problems paying the rent), sometimes he would go to the balcony and smoke, and stay there for like 10 minutes, while I was waiting for him to come back... Kept interrupting me while I was speaking, even though I tried to be civilized the whole time.
I feel like I can't stay here, I'm living in the apartment of a racist man. I don't even sleep well.. please advise.

First of all, I don't think I'm inferior. Of course I have my insecurities, everyone has their insecurities, but I did go to college, I have a good job, and even if I ended up unemployed I'd still have the money to pay the rent.
I was just trying to be nice, because I always had a good relationship with my landlords and I find that very much important. The man was arrogant the whole time.
I blame myself because the day I saw the apartment for the first time he lied to me, saying there was another young men visiting the apartment, and when I came to visit it, I found out he was just a friend of my landlord. He was aggressive even in that day (before signing the contract) but I signed it anyway because the apartment really is great.
Now I don't understand how did I do this.. I'm living in the property of a racist man, and I fell awful. Please advise.

First you should report him to your country's equivalent of the Better Business Bureau for this blatant discrimination.

Second, you should move in somewhere you are welcome. No one should have to put up with that nonsense.

I cannot report anything because there isn't any crime, I just feel very uncomfortable.
And I cannot leave because I signed the contract. I just feel so stupid, how could I do this?
Now every month this racist man is going to receive money from me, until the contract minimum time expires, which will be six months. But six months sounds so long, I can't even sleep well.
I blame myself for this, because I should have known in the first day the man was an idiot. He lied, he was aggressive.
The day I moved in he said that if I did anything wrong, he could throw me out. I'm an engineer, I have a good job, I don't have any debts whatsoever, I'm a civilized man, I'm not racist also, I have lots of white friends, I just try to be polite in this situations. All my ex-landlords really liked me, and I only moved here to be closer to where I work.
I don't know what to do, I feel like a little kid... I don't want to give my money to a racist man, but I'm forced to, because I don't problems with justice.
How would you react in this situation? This is not the first racist person I met, but this time is really affecting to me.

There does not have to be a crime in order for you to report them to the BBB. Do some research. You are living in a hostile environment. There is something that you can do about it.

Please stick to the topic, I would really appreciate some help.
I'm not sexist (I've noticed a lot of sexist threads in this forum, and I find that very sad). I have sisters that I very much like.
All opinions are welcome from men and women. Please advise.

Hi again, thanks for your comment but I really don't think that would help. I don't any proof.
I have to deal with this in another way.
I keep blaming myself for accepting this, how could I have done this..

Can you get out of the contract?

If so, can you handle the penalties?

Next time, scout out any potential Land lord from now on.

You left the part out where he called you "boy" and told you to go fetch his tea and house slippers.

I'll have to stay 6 more months, it's the minimum time in the contract.
I can get out, but obviously, I'll have to pay the rent.
I don't know what to do.

When I say I'll have to pay the rent, it means I can get out, but pay the rent of the next 5 months.. without living here.

He isn't being racist he is just trying you the way you want to be treated, black men like to say that they're genetically faster and stronger, and they like it when people say they're genetically stronger, well there is another stereotype that says that black men have the lowest iq levels genetically and have lower iq levels than black women too, and that they're incapable of going to college without affirmative action, so he's just following the stereotypes that black men started, you want to be genetically strong, so prepared for people to consider you stupid too.

You are going to have to do what makes YOU comfortable. You've expressed your situation however, only YOU can make the decision to either stay the 5 months and the rent, OR leave- paying the 5 months rent living somewhere else.

Differcult the decision might be...you have to narrow it down to one; however, weigh ALL the pros and cons before making your FINAL decision. This is not the time to be afraid but it is the time to be SMART. Use GOOD judgement; and good luck.

*what was meant: was that you could either stay the 5 months in thee apartment- and pay the rent, or leave to be somewhere else, and pay that 5 months rent.
