Are Black Women Held to a Higher Beauty Standard than White Women?

In America, the cultural standard says you MUST be stick thin, light skinned, with straight hair, and Caucasoid or near Caucasoid features to be considered pretty. Hence, Halle Berry is considered the epitome of beauty in the black community, even though she is actually only part African American and has a white mother.
When you’re measuring the average black woman against Halle, she is going to come up short. But I’ve noticed that white women have a lower beauty standard to meet, because white women can measure themselves against a Sarah Jessica Parker, who is a plain jane at best, and be considered attractive as long she is thin and dies her hair blonde.

This society bolsters white women to believe they are cute just because they have thighs as large as a pencil and some blonde hair.

You have to ignore the standard of beauty. It is almost like an oxymoron. Here's why: Light skin is more desired but wrinkles faster. Dark skin is smooth and silky but less desired. There are no caucasian features. All features originated in black people. In America, most blacks have thicker facial features because we are descendants of West Africans who were slaves, and they had those features. Blacks in other parts of Africa have the exact thin features that are associated with whites, and they are not mixed.
To me, Halle Berry is pretty, but in an average sort of way. You cannot compare Halle Berry against the average black woman because Halle Berry does not represent nor does she look like the average black woman. Women need to stop comparing themselves to other women. That's exactly why we fall prey to this silly beauty standard.

Right, if you aren't absolutely perfect as a Black woman or light there you go.

If I had a dime for all the "you are pretty for a Black girl" "you are pretty for a dark girl" words I got in my life, I would be rich rich rich!

I agree 100% w/ Nappy . Why would you as a Black woman compare yourself to a woman that is only half such as Halle and she's actually just an average looking mixed woman but white people have put her on a pedastal because they feel close to her due to her being half white. And we jumped on the bandwagon because the white man said that's what beautiful is. We should know better. Why should should we want to desire pale and flaky skin when our skin is dark ,smooth and ageless. Why should we desire stringy hair that attracts lice when we have thick, fine and curly hair. Why should we desire to be thin as a rail when we have nice full lips, shapely thighs, firm breast , and a curvacious figure that will make Lindsey Lohan sit her skinny ass down. Give me a break.Black women are gorgeous and everyone knows this. That's why they try so hard to tell us we are not it.

Girl, me too. I get that all the time from Black dudes who ironically are blacker than me. Like being dark excludes you from beauty or the belief that all dark women are ugly. Some of the most gorgeous sisters I've ever since are dark.

Agreed. Black women are gorgeous. But let's not disparage everyone else. White women, asian women, amerindian women, latina women, all women are gorgeous. We have many flavors of gorgeous. To put the white woman on a pedestal as the only form of gorgeous is inaccurate and just plain wrong. I'm tired of it. And, as I said, you don't even have to be a particualarly pretty white woman to be considered "gorgeous" Just by virtue of being white (as long as you are not fat) you are assumed to be attractive. How else can you explain the pushing of Sarah Jessica Parker or Kyra Sydgwick as pretty women? They are some of the ugliest things I've ever seen...

American cultural standard of beauty is not a standard that's written stone. And anybody who judges him/herself based on those standards has some serious problems......

I agree that our society places a HIGH value on blonde hair and a slim figure (so much so that many women will dye their hair blonde- without changing any other aspect of their appearance- and receive VASTLY different treatment as a result). But there's a factor you are forgetting- Sarah Jessica Parker is a celebrity. Let's be honest, neither Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts (I know she’s not a blonde, but she’s considered by many people to be a knock out), or Uma Thurman would get a second look if they were "regular" women.

Hey,
I just wanted to thank you guys for the comments posted on this forum, they really made me think about the words that I use and the beauty standards that I had accepted to be universal. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so many different eyes are looking. There are so many different ways to be beautiful, and it's sick that all women are examined through the white lens. I especially appreciated the comment on white beauty (can be beautiful as long as she is thin and blonde). It's very true, and good to realize.
Thanks.

LOL! Most sistas I see in everyday life...

weigh at least 300lbs....

have wacky hairstyles with colors that would embarrass a RAINBOW...

and have tattooed enough artwork on themselves that would make the Louvre Museum in Paris ENVIOUS.

And these type of women are allegedly FRUSTRATED with trying to look like Halle Berry? PUH-LEASE!

Halle Berry may or may not be the black standard of beauty on the pedestal that Hollywood has put her on-that's neither here nor there, but that's no excuse for so many black American women walking around looking like branded water buffaloes! LOSE THE DAMN WEIGHT! QUIT TRYING TO OUTDO PATTI LABELLE-EVEN SHE STOPPED WITH THE CRAZY HAIRSTYLES! PUT A LID ON THE TATTS-THEY AIN'T CUTE ANYMORE!

URGENT:....

So far, our numbers are growing. However, most of our people are responding to threads that could not have been started by African-Americans or Africans. Let's take this seriously and get the word out to people in this forum. We don't want for them to self-destroy. We will remain positive. As sunflower stated:

"Petty interests and personal differences must be put aside to work for the common goal of our people's welfare."

I couldn't have said it better.

What do you expect? We live in a white owned, ran, and washed world - white women are considered the ultimate beauty and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Black women need to start having confidence in thier own beauty and the right man will come along and sweep you off your feet.

If we are so ugly, don't look. Mind your own business. I don't have any of that and I am an African American woman, but I WON'T let you put down other sisters.

Says the media, don't believe me. Turn on your TV, pick up a magazine, listen to the way people talk. If someone is talking about a white woman who happens to be blonde, it's always "The Blonde"
They make it a point to say someone is blonde. The Blonde is the the cadillac of white women. Women have changed their lives by going blonde. And one of the biggest selling books right now is called Skinny B*tch. What does that tell you? And if you think these things don't affect people, you're naive.
