Apparently no one told that man - that he is the one who determines the sex of the child! He either provides as X or a Y.

Leave it to a backward peoples to blame others for their lack. Ignorant people like this ignorant man are the product of an ignorant civilisation/religion/culture. Are they REALLY ready to become part of the 21st century world community? Personally I'd like to have as many Afghan women as possible immigrate here. Tajik and Pashtun women deserve better from their "men".....

He was told that God determines the sex of the child. Going against God wasn't an option. It was easier for him to kill his wife. Just because the calendar says this is 2012 it doesn't mean that we're in 2012.

Read the above. Ignorance is an excuse, not a reason. Perhaps the stupid bastid needs a womans' punishment..... Stoning. For stupidity. Less defective genes in the pool..... Personally,I'd like to wrap him in a pigskin killed and skinned before his eyes, stuff a piece of raw pork in his mouth then slit his throat with my Kabar and bury him in an unmarked grave. No Heaven,no Virgins. Just another dead 11th Century uneducated bastid less to pester the 21st Century.

Let's see now ..... that Afghani killed his wife for a reason - not a very good reason in our eyes, but for a reason.

What reason do the Americans give when they blast up high schools, shopping malls, post offices, express-ways and the occasional country like Iraq? Make-believe WMD's?

It would be interesting to know how the Afghan newspapers report such incidents: "The Americans proved just how primitive they are today when they went out into the street to rob an ice cream truck and then carried on shooting up the All Night Food Store just to impress their scantily-clad bimbo girlfiends, then they all went to an orgie to screw each other like dogs in the alley."

For you information - the moslem calendar is now somewhere around 1400 or 1500 ..... not 2012.

Do you want to know the difference?

Here in the US, when a man kills his wife, he is put on trial for murder, and when found guilty is put in prison.

I doubt we'll ever see a follow up story, but it would be interesting to see how the Afganistan community judges this man.

If a community accepts something as normal; then it becomes part of their collective culture. Even if you happen to live in a Western nation like the United States or Sweeden, if you personally think it's OK for a man to punish his wife for bearing a girl child, then you belong to a separate culture. You can't claim a culture simply by birthright or immigration.

So despite not having seen a "follow up" you have judged their culture, and have expounded upon it at lenght.

You believe that because your own propaganda media has failed to "follow up" that it is some sort of proof that the culture is rotten. I say it is your culture that is rotten by reporting on the incident and leaving out the details that might reveal something they don't want you to know. It plays very well with your prejudices, but hey(!), that's the whole idea.

No, read my post, I never came to any conclusion about the culture of Afganistan, and I certainly didn't expound on it. What I expounded on was how cultures in general should be judged and how an individual becomes part of a culture.

Fine. But the bottom line is that such reports are meant to fire one's prejudices during a time when we "in the west" are supose to support "our" presence in Afghanistan.

Such incidents, in our own respecitve countries, are routinely followed up with the charges and punishment. In this case, however, we are left to assume that no charges will be made. I do not believe that is true.
