Bob Hunter commentary: Olympic medals define the athlete, not t...

Full story: Columbus Dispatch
I used to think 1988 was a pretty good year. Then I realized that the United States won only six medals that winter at the Calgary Olympics, and it occurred to me I must be mistaken. Full Story

The nationalism that surrounds the Olympics is even more ridiculous when you look deeper. Tanith Belbin skates for the US but she's a Canadian. Her citizenship was rushed through thanks to an act of congress. How silly is that? She's an ice dancer, nothing more, and congress made sure she was granted citzenship for no other reason than competing in the Olympics. Before you blame congress be aware that George W. Bush signed it.

There's a Japanese skater representing Russia, a Candanian for Australia and a US Skier is representing Canada.

More often than not, somebody with a little bit of heritage will use that to gain an Olympic bid for that country simply because the country they call home doesn't have a spot for them.

I can understand, however, why Canada is kind of testy about not faring better. They're the host nation. This is their Olympics and these are their sports. Canada is the official country of winter. It's not about making a statement for the rest of the world, it's about putting on a show for the home crowd.

I've always hated the medal count. It seems to be counter to the Olympic spirit. As a kid, it seemed important that we compete well against the Soviet Union because any domination on their part somehow indicated a superiority of their political philosophy. The Soviet collapse has shown just how silly that belief was. Go Team USA, but also all atheletes, regardless of their nationalities!

I still get aroused just picturing Katarina Witt in jack boots and a leather jacket, getting ready to dominate me with a riding crop.

Well put, Mr. Hunter. We don't have to put our national pride on the line every time one of us dares to compete. Isn't that taking everything a little too seriously? Now if the Buckeyes lose another football game I want someones head! Or not. Keep it fun, folks!
