Alas, there are Long Island cops as guilty of speeding, road rage and DWI as the very many other drivers here on the roads that cops DON'T PATROL.

Bad drivers are criminals. So is an over-coddled and over-paid police department that ignores their
public duty to maintain public safety on the roads and highways.

And the suffolk police want more money from the taxpayers. I saw in one report that the suffolk cop on the expressway in the accident was being chased by deputies.

Let's see: a cop who flaunts the law by excessive speeding and no seat belt. He and the other cop who was killed in another accident with a beamer are endangering the rest of us on the road. If alcohol was involved, would it get reported? I doubt it. How do they afford these cars? Or shouldn't I ask? So much for Suffolk's finest ...

Remedial reading classes may be in order for you. It says it was borrowed.

Original articles said nothing about that.

No doubt another "professional courtesy".

Invincible cop with his tin badge. I guess he figured no one would stop him. The tree certainly did. No seat belt, speeding & killing someone else. He's being honored? Give me a break

While my heart & condolences go out to the families, this Police Officer killed someone with reckless driving. Had he been anyone but a cop, the story & comments would read a bit different. Excessive speed and obvious reckless driving does not make a hero, especially from a Village where one mile an hour over the limit gets you pulled over.
Last time I checked, vehicular homicide was a crime..........No seatbelts, high speed and rain..what a waste.

No surprise here! Now is the public gonna hear the test results on P O Bowen who was speeding on the LIE ? You watch the spin job you get on that one !! But any one with comman sense knows alcohol was a factor in that case ! And theirs no way they can tell us he wasn't speeding with the damage he did to the guardrail , car , and himself ..and no seatbelt !! But he was a cop and marine !! Big deal , didn't help .. did it ? Wife didn't seem to broken up either ,given interviews 15 minutes after her husband and father of her child ripped himself to shreads !!

Cops: Ferrari going at 'excessive speed' before crash

I also have a problem when you pay a policeman enough to buy a Ferrari, I am sure the PBA and SCPD will justify the salaries once again.

I missed the part where it said it was borrowed, but that leads to a question of who loaned it to him - a dealer? The average person does not have the ability to borrow a car that expensive unless they can buy it.

I am certain many of our neighbors have at one time or another had dealings with a police officer who jumped to conclusions during his investigation. I am positive many neighbors became annoyed and irritated with the officer for doing this.

While it is reasonable to believe the officers who died on Father's Day may have had more then a few, at this time there is no evidence of drinking.

And guess what, we will never learn the toxicology results because the ME is not going to officially release that info for public consumption.

Though we do have reliable evidence that the three men who died brought this upon themselves. No tears for them. They are dead and feel no pain...no matter how hard we bash them.

Yet, among the living, the real victims of their reckless acts do feel pain. Probably more pain then most of us would care to endure. I ache for the kids who now face life without their dads.

These men will soon be laid to rest...how about we give the bashing a rest and offer the living victims some comfort?

Here is the first article that was written about the matter: http://www.newsday.com/news/local/suffolk/ny-...

The article clearly stated and I quote: "The accident was the second fatal crash involving an off-duty police officer in a 24-hour span. An off-duty Quogue police officer, Richard Kappel, was killed in a double-fatal accident in Eastport Sunday when his Ferrari crashed into a tree."

This article stated that the Ferrari did belong to Mr. Kappel and this is where I first read about it. The newer article I missed the point, but I would question which article was right. Your response showed that you did not see the article that stated Mr. Kappel owned the car.
