Redskins Cut Punter, Rework 2 Contracts

The Washington Redskins released punter Ryan Plackemeier yesterday, the team announced, and have also completed new contracts for two veterans, according to league sources.

Plackemeier, who was signed before last season's seventh game to replace struggling draft pick Durant Brooks, had one year remaining on his deal and was placed on waivers. Like Brooks, he placed near the bottom of the NFL in most punting categories.

Zac Atterberry, signed in January, is the only punter on the current roster. Atterberry lost out to Plackemeier in a punting competition at Redskins Park when Brooks was released. Atterberry spent the 2008 offseason with Chicago, his only pro experience.

Plackemeier Provides Quite a Kick

When he holds the ball somewhere near midfield, his leg about to swing through, sending a football hurtling downfield, Redskins punter Ryan Plackemeier usually finds a target -- the 8-yard line.

For the 8-yard line holds an infinite array of possibilities. Most punt returners are coached to stand on the 10-yard line and let go any balls that sail over their heads, figuring they will roll into the end zone. To Plackemeier, the 8 is close enough to the 10 to force the returner to make a choice -- catch or let go? And if the returner lets the ball pass, a punt that hits the 8 still stands a chance of being downed by defenders before it wobbles to the goal line.
