Colston's shutout both rare and normal
New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton didn't seem too surprised or concerned over the fact that receiver Marques Colston was held without a catch for the first time in 87 games played during Sunday's 26-24 loss at the Cleveland Browns . As rare as that was, Payton indicated that a receiver having a quiet day -- even Colston -- is pretty normal in a Saints offense that spreads the ball around so much.

Saints downgrade Kenny Stills to out on Sunday
Stills has been bothered by a quad injury for the last couple of weeks, but the team left the door open for him to play on Friday when Stills was listed as questionable on the team's final injury report of the week. That door slammed shut on Saturday, though, when the Saints downgraded Stills to out for their game against the Falcons.

In trimming the roster down to 53 names by Saturday's 3 p.m. deadline, New Orleans made 22 cuts, the headliners being cornerback Champ Bailey and receiver Robert Meachem. Those decisions mean Patrick Robinson will start opposite Keenan Lewis this season, and Nick Toon and Joe Morgan hold down the last two roster spots at wide receiver.

Saints rookie linebacker Khairi Fortt couldn't hide his disappointment Wednesday after being notified he'd be placed on his team's short-term injured reserve to begin the 2014 season. "I've been working my whole life to get to this point where I could finally play my first official game in the NFL," said Fortt, who hurt a hamstring in the Saints' second exhibition of the preseason on Aug. 15. "I've been battling this hamstring issue which will probably be good in the next week or two, but I know they're just taking a precaution."

Saints receiver Kenny Stills says strengthening injured quad could be a season-long focus
By the time he met with reporters Thursday, second-year Saints receiver Kenny Stills had accepted that strengthening the quadriceps muscle he's hurt three times in the last couple of months would be a primary focus for him throughout New Orleans' 2014 campaign. The ideal way for that lingering injury to heal would be for him to not do anything.
