During his postgame news conference, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton addressed a controversy from Wednesday, when gave Detroit's Ndamukong Suh what some said was an insensitive nickname. Newton said he never had a chance to address Suh directly on Sunday.

Backup QB, defense lead Panthers over Bucs

With their starting quarterback sidelined for the first time in his young career by a rib injury, the Carolina Panthers leaned on veteran backup Derek Anderson and a stingy defense as they withstood a late comeback in a season-opening 20-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Anderson, making his first start since Dec. 5, 2010, completed 24 of 34 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns Sunday afternoon at Raymond James Stadium.
