New combination therapy looks promising against ulcer bacteria

Helicobater pylori , a bacteria implicated in peptic ulcers and gastritis, was eradicated in 95 percent patients who took a 7-day course of combination therapy with levofloxacin, omeprazole, nitazoxanide and doxycycline compared to eradication in only 80.9 percent of patients on lansoprazole, amoxicillin and clarithromycin for seven days.

Common heartburn drugs may reduce anti-clotting medications' benefits

Washington, May 7 : Scientists have found that the medicines used for the treatment of heartburn and ulcers can reduce the anti-clotting action of the medication clopidogrel, thereby resulting in about 50 per cent increase in the combined risk of hospitalisation for heart attack, stroke, and other serious cardiovascular illnesses.

Plavix increases risk of second heart attack in users of proton-pump inhibitors

PATIENTS WHO are given clopidogrel after a heart attack are at significantly higher risk for another one if they take most proton pump inhibitors to manage their stomach acid, according to a recent study published online by the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
