  • Deputies use stun gun after suspect flees

    Authorities on Monday were holding a 20-year-old man on probation violations after a weekend arrest in which Santa Fe County sheriff's deputies said they used a stun gun to help subdue the defendant after he ran from officers and hid in a utility closet. An arrest statement said Rafael Jimenez is accused of violating his parole from a 2016 armed robbery, multiple drug charges and for fleeing city police after an attempted traffic stop on June 8. Deputies said that after they located Jimenez on Friday at a bus stop near the intersection of Pacheco Street and St. Michael's Drive, he ran toward the San Miguel Apartments, where deputies later found him hiding in a utility closet.

    Redwolf Pope, a Native American activist charged with raping a woman in Santa Fe last year, also faces rape accusations in Seattle, a police statement shows. Pope, 41, who court documents say has homes in both Seattle and Santa Fe, was charged in Santa Fe in late July with criminal sexual penetration, criminal sexual contact, aggravated battery and false imprisonment after a Seattle-area woman told investigators Pope had raped her when she was visiting Santa Fe last year.

    A judge in Santa Fe has ordered the county sheriff's office to bring a Native American activist back from Phoenix, where he was arrested last month on a Santa Fe police warrant accusing him of rape and other counts. Redwolf Pope, 41, who seemed to split his time between Seattle and Santa Fe, was charged in July with criminal sexual penetration, criminal sexual contact, aggravated battery and false imprisonment after a Seattle-area woman told police Pope had raped her when she was visiting Santa Fe last fall.

    A search warrant affidavit filed in state District Court sheds new light on what happened in the early morning hours of July 30 when south-central Santa Fe resident Robert J. Romero, 52, was fatally shot in his yard. According to the document, Romero's wife told police that he had fallen asleep downstairs in their house on Las Casitas, a cul-de-sac near Herb Martinez Park.

    A special prosecutor in the case against a Santa Fe County deputy accused of fatally shooting another deputy in Las Cruces in 2014 will no longer pursue the matter and said it will be up to the district attorney in Las Cruces about what happens next, according to court documents. In the filing Wednesday, special prosecutor Troy Davis refers to the dismissal in May of the first-degree charge against defendant Tai Chan based on double-jeopardy arguments.

Yes, this is a town with property crime problems, drug addiction and other types of violence, but this senseless death seemed to take crime to a different place.

"Due to the circumstances of Rob's death and safety of the family, their names have been kept from this obituary," they said in a notice published Tuesday in The New Mexican about a funeral scheduled Wednesday morning for 52-year-old Robert Romero.

    Santa Fe Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the death of Michael Willms, a 58-year-old Santa Fe man who was found slain in his midtown apartment in late June. Court records document at least two instances in which Willms, a longtime Los Angeles event planner who moved to Santa Fe around 2012, said he was beaten by younger men who he had invited to live with him.

According to police, 52-year-old Robert Romero was killed outside his home in the 2300 block of Las Casitas, a cul-de-sac next to the park, during a physical altercation with a suspect who fled the scene and has remained at large.

    Investigators have not made any arrests in the shooting death of a 52-year-old man outside his home in south-central Santa Fe early Monday, a police spokesman said Wednesday. Greg Gurule, spokesman for the police department, said officers had no additional information on the slaying of Robert Romero beyond what was included in a news release Tuesday.

In a New Mexico court filing, Redwolf Pope, 41, said last week that authorities wrongly suggested videos they obtained show him sexually assaulting females who appear to have been drugged.

  • Homeless man faces new charges after release from jail

    A young homeless man who was accused of violent crimes in two separate cases last fall - including the beating of a Santa Fe man who later would become the city's second homicide victim of 2018 - saw those charges dismissed and was recently was released from jail. A Santa Fe County grand jury indicted Culley on one count of aggravated battery and two counts of tampering with evidence in an October incident in which an employee of the downtown Five & Dime General Store was stabbed in the back.

    A Santa Fe man accused of escaping from police custody, trying to carjack a state government vehicle from a woman at a gas pump, wresting a gun from a police officer and firing at him is too dangerous to be released before his case goes to trial, a state District Court judge ruled Wednesday. At the end of a hearing on a state prosecutor's motion requesting to detain Noedel without bond until trial, Judge T. Glenn Ellington said, "The history of Mr. Noedel shows clearly he is not capable or willing a to follow court orders or abiding by limitations or restrictions."

    A Santa Fe Magistrate Court judge issued an arrest warrant for Pope earlier this week, following a nearly two-month Santa Fe Police Department investigation into allegations that he had secretly recorded himself sexually assaulting unconscious women and had video cameras hidden in rooms of an apartment he shares with other people. Court documents say Pope's roommates brought their concerns and possible video evidence of sex crimes to police in early June, which prompted an investigation.
