    Los Angeles residents grieved on Thursday alongside those in South Carolina for the nine people gunned down inside a historic Charleston church , with many here asking the same question raised across the nation: How could this happen? As some African-American churches across Los Angeles planned interfaith vigils to bring the community together, others called the slayings an unconscionable deed and that the 21-year-old white shooter's actions were yet another example of guns falling into evil hands. One of Thursday night's vigils was planned at First AME Church in South Los Angeles , the oldest black church established in the city.

    A North Hollywood man is accused of stealing more than $50,000 from women while pretending to help them get loan modifications. A North Hollywood man was scheduled to be arraigned today on charges that he bilked three women in their 60s and 70s out of thousands of dollars while claiming that he was helping them to get mortgage modifications.

    A North Hollywood man was scheduled to be arraigned today on charges that he bilked three women in their 60s and 70s out of thousands of dollars while claiming that he was helping them to get mortgage modifications. Jovanny Malka, 29, is charged with three felony counts each of theft from an elder or dependent adult exceeding $950 and grand theft of personal property exceeding $950.
