    Gov. Nikki Haley took to the road Wednesday for a ceremonial re-signing of a concealed weapon reciprocity bill with Georgia that became law nearly three months ago. The bill lets South Carolina law enforcement officials recognize Georgia's gun licensing law, which allows owners to carry openly or to tote concealed weapons.

  • Murphy Village fraud case to head to court soon

    All 20 North Augusta residents indicted last week on racketeering and fraud charges have not been arrested, but a hearing in federal court is expected in the coming weeks. Nancy Wicker, chief of the criminal division of the U.S. Attorneys Office in Columbia, said the 20 North Augusta residents, who live in the Irish Traveler community of Murphy Village, in addition to two Augusta residents, were not arrested after their indictment was announced Aug. 16. Wicker said, depending on the process, defendants facing white collar crimes are not arrested, as they are not believed to be a flight risk or a danger to the community.

    A man wanted for attempted murder in connection with a June shooting incident outside of the Pinecrest Apartments has been arrested, according to Aiken County arrest records. Randall Sharon Madison, 22, of Augusta, is charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm into a dwelling, arrest records show.

  • Beech Island man charged in connection to armed robbery

    A Beech Island man was charged Thursday in connection to an armed robbery at a North Augusta intersection last month involving an 18-year-old man and woman. James Lester Cowart, 26, of the 500 block of Pine Log Road, is charged with two counts of armed robbery while allegedly armed with a deadly weapon and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to jail records.

    An employee with an Aiken Road restaurant called police Wednesday claiming an unknown black male walked into the restaurant and stole a to-go order sitting on the counter. A North Augusta woman called police Wednesday night claiming a man, who goes by the name “Jeremy,” called her saying he needed a place to stay, because he had just stabbed someone in Columbia County.

  • North Augusta man jailed on child porn charges

    Derrick Jonathon Donchez, 33, is charged with nine counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison on each count; three counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison on each count; one count of unlawful possession of a schedule II substance; and one count of possession of meth/cocaine base, first offense, according to jail records. Donchez was arrested Monday and taken to the Aiken County detention center, where he remained Tuesday afternoon, according to jail records.

    A North Augusta man died Saturday after he was shot during a robbery in an Augusta parking lot in May. Jacob Anderson Britt, 19, of the 400 block of Wilderness Trail, died at Emory University Medical Center in Atlanta at 4:37 a.m. Saturday, said Richmond County Coroner Kenneth Boose. Britt succumbed to his injuries sustained after being shot May 31 in the parking lot of the Bon Air Apartments on Walton Way, Boose said.

    Officers responded around 10:30 p.m. to an apartment complex on West Hugh Street, where an officer found one black male suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper right side of the buttocks, a police report said. The victim, of North Augusta, told police he was hanging out near the apartment complex in the parking lot listening to music when he saw a white Mercury Grand Marquis with its lights turned off, the report said.
