Evelyn Danielle Smith, 40, of Muskegon Heights is being charged with solicitation to murder her ex-husband by trying to hire a hit woman who was really an undercover police officer. A Muskegon County 60th District Court magistrate signed Smith's arrest warrant and set interim bond at $1 million cash or surety Thursday morning, Aug. 6. Arraignment was expected Thursday. Comment?

Troopers and detectives from the Michigan State Police Rockford Post and Grand Haven Detachment and West Michigan Enforcement Team initiated an investigation into the allegations on July 27. During the investigation, police say they exposed the plot by the 40-year-old suspect to kill her former husband. On Aug. 4, the state police established an operation in which an undercover officer posing as an assassin met with the suspect in Muskegon Heights. Comment?

A nearly six-year-long federal prison sentence was handed down to a 22-year-old Muskegon Heights man for being a felon in possession of a firearm. A plea agreement kept Xavier McCarty from facing a more serious firearm theft from a licensed dealer charge. Comment?

A man who broke into Felix's Marina and Guns in Ottawa County was sentenced Thursday, July 30, to nearly six years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Xavier Velvie McCarty, 22, packed up handguns from the gun shop, at 14023 Green St., in Robison Township, on Oct. 14 but he did not get far. Comment?

An armed robbery case against Ibraccio Cortazz Wilkinson , 19, of Grand Rapids, was recently dismissed at least temporarily because a necessary witness could not be served with a subpoena. A separate weapons and resisting police case against Wilkinson continues, with the case bound over for trial in Muskegon County Circuit Court. Comment?

The Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office intends to "change or add" charges against Ishmail James Autman of Muskegon, who's currently charged with open murder in the shooting death of Peggy Sue Everett while she was driving him in a minivan in Muskegon Heights, Autman's attorney says. Muskegon County Assistant Public Defender Chad Catalino said in court Monday, Aug. 3, that Prosecutor D.J. Hilson on Monday submitted a "memorandum of law" to the judge and the defense proposing to "change or add additional charges" of discharge of a firearm from a motor vehicle causing death, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm.
