Rescuers were trying to free the woman from inside her car around 7 a.m. when the truck plowed through orange cones and into the Jetta, killing 56-year-old Maria Vera of Palm Desert. Comment?

A 23-year-old Palm Desert man is expected to be sentenced on Feb. 29 to six years in prison for throwing a Molotov cocktail into a Coachella Valley mosque. Carl James Dial, 23, pleaded guilty Thursday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio to a charge of arson of a structure, and admitted sentence- enhancing allegations of using an explosive device and committing a hate crime, court records show. When police promise a suspect that he won't be prosecuted if he tells them the truth, and he does, can he still be prosecuted? Yes, a state appeals court said Friday, as long as the promise didn't come from the district attorney. But anything he said to the officers can't be used as evidence against him. Comment?

Sergeant Dan Marshall said 20-year-old Jamonte Tribble and 22-year-old John Tribble, both from Indio, were taken into custody shortly after officers served a search warrant in the 82200 block of Garden Avenue around 5 a.m. Marshall said neither of the men were home at the time of the search warrant, but police found them shortly after near Dr. Carreon Park where they were arrested. According to police, the Tribbles are both facing charges of attempted homicide after a man was shot in the area of Garden Avenue and Daisy Street in Indio around 10:20 p.m. on October 21. The man was shot twice in his upper body and was treated and released from the hospital. Comment?

Felony charges were filed Wednesday against a Studio City man accused of breaking into homes at country clubs in Indian Wells and Palm Desert and stealing luxury automobiles, golf clubs and other personal property. Earnie Steven Hooks, 41, was set to be arraigned in Indio Wednesday afternoon on 44 counts of burglary and eight counts of auto theft. Comment?

A 54-year-old Whitewater man charged with fatally beating a 3-year-old terrier mix with a shovel, then dumping the dog over a fence to get it out of his yard, has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial. Efren Rodriguez Martinez is charged with one count of felony animal cruelty and a sentence-enhancing weapon-use allegation for allegedly attacking the dog last June 8 on Kimdale Drive in Whitewater.
