  • Hays man faces additional sexual charges

    A Hays man in Ellis County Jail on sodomy and rape charges faces additional sexual charges involving two other alleged victims. On July 26, Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees filed charges of criminal sodomy, aggravated indecent liberties with a child and aggravated sexual battery against Andrew Bayle Claude, 20. The first two charges are alleged to have occurred Dec. 21 and involved a 15-year-old, while the third charge is alleged to have occurred on March 17 and involved a 16-year-old.

  • Barnett: GOP nomination is not a 2-person race Poste...

    Jim Barnett says the idea that the Republican nomination for governor is a two-person race is far from the truth. Barnett, an Emporia physician and former state senator, and his wife and running mate, Rosie U.S. State Department, were in Hays on Friday and discussed several issues as they wrapped up their primary campaign.

  • Man convicted in armed robbery at Hays hotel

    A man arrested in a December armed robbery at a Hays hotel was found guilty on two of the original four charges against him Monday in Ellis County District Court. Pascual Rueda Guzman entered no contest pleas to a felony charge of attempted aggravated battery - amended from the original felony charge of aggravated battery - and a felony charge of aggravated intimidation of a witness.

  • Man pleads no contest in plea bargain

    A Hays man entered a guilty plea Friday morning to amended charges in a case where he was accused of grabbing the genitals of a boy who was staying in his home. In the plea agreement presented to Judge Blake Bittel in Ellis County District Court, Edward Layton McElhaney, 53, pleaded no contest to aggravated battery and sexual battery.

  • Man pleads not guilty to indecent liberties charge

    A Hays man pleaded not guilty to a charge of indecent liberties with a child Wednesday afternoon in Ellis County District Court. A two-day jury trial will be scheduled for Edward McElhaney, 53. McElhaney was arrested and charged in April for the incident reported to have occurred in March.

  • Men waive preliminary hearing in car burglary

    Two Hays men waived their right to a preliminary hearing Thursday in Ellis County District Court on charges stemming from a vehicle robbery. Jordyn Mikhail Steinike and Uriah Javaughn Steinike appeared in court together Thursday afternoon for a scheduled preliminary hearing.
