One man is in custody and another man is at large after a Menlo Park residence was burglarized Thursday afternoon. Carlos Yepez Saavedra, 21, of East Palo Alto, was arrested and booked into County Jail for residential burglary, resisting arrest, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, evading police in a vehicle with disregard for safety, and a parole violation. A Menlo Park man charged with gun- and drug-related crimes, as well as child endangerment, had the same child in his car when he was arrested for similar crimes in 2011, according to the county's top prosecutor. When Jameel Deshawn Collins, 36, was pulled over in East Palo Alto by Menlo Park detectives for a possible traffic infraction in February, they observed a large amount of marijuana and a digital scale in plain view and within arm's reach of his 5-year-old son, who was buckled in without a car seat in the passenger seat, police said. An attempt by Menlo Park police to talk to the driver of a vehicle whose inhabitants appeared to be scoping out homes to burglarize led to a car and foot chase and the arrest of one of at least two burglary suspects. According to police reports, on Thursday, June 23, around 2:15 p.m., a uniformed Menlo Park police officer approached the driver's side of a car near the 300 and 400 blocks of O'Connor Street in Menlo Park that had two people in it who officers suspected were looking for homes to burglarize. On June 6, officers responded to Edison-Brentwood Elementary School at 2086 Clarke Ave. after school staff had arrived that morning and discovered that several classrooms had been burglarized and vandalized, according to police. Police officers, responding to a gunshot locator report, arrived at Illinois Street and Bay Road at 10 p.m., where they discovered a 30-year-old man who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on the scene, but the man died of his wounds before they could take him to a hospital. Comment?
