Volunteers have been working to clean and clear the Old Joliet Prison yard in preparation for its first public event behind the wall on Aug. 25. "It's never too late to mend" is etched in stone in the floor in the segregation unit of the Old Joliet Prison Even though the prison closed 16 years ago and has been plagued by vandals and arsonists, there is now an enthusiastic effort underway to mend it and give it a repurposed life, befitting its heritage, its connection to the Blues Brothers and Route 66. Spearheaded by the Joliet Area Historical Museum, the city of Joliet, and the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce, there has been an "explosion of volunteers" at the Collins Street site every Saturday for the past several months, the museum's executive director Greg Peerbolte said.
