Clifton police continue to search for the individual who threw a rock which struck a police officer in the face in June. A City police sergeant, who was not identified by police, was struck with a rock by an unknown individual when the officers responded to a domestic dispute on June 25, as previously reported by Clifton Journal. Comment?

In the wake of an assault on a city police officer, Mayor James Anzaldi this week mounted an emotional defense of police officers, calling on people to show greater respect for them. Anzaldi also challenged political leaders, including President Obama, to use stronger language in support of police after a string of targeted killings of cops across the country. Comment?

A candlelight vigil will be held Friday night at City Hall in memory of the five police officers who were killed by a gunman during a protest march last week. On July 7, army reservist and Afghan War veteran Micah Xavier Johnson targeted white police in downtown Dallas and opened fire at the close of what had been a peaceful protest march organized by the Black Lives Matter organization. A 22-year-old Clifton man fatally shot himself with an off-duty Paterson police officer's firearm at a Fourth of July party in the borough on Monday, authorities said in a release on Tuesday. Xavier Cuevas-Soto, who lived on Harding Avenue, shot and killed himself in an "apparent suicide" after he "obtained" the officer's firearm, said Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes. Comment?

A Paterson teen pleaded guilty Friday to fatally shooting a Clifton liquor store worker near the city's Botany Village last year. Dariel Pena was 17 when he was arrested and charged with the murder of Leandro Mendoza, 21, who was shot outside a Lexington Avenue store in October 2015. Comment?

Members of Clifton's gay community will for the first time fly the rainbow-striped pride flag at City Hall on Saturday, a celebration of pride month as well as a memorial for the 49 people killed this month in a mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub. After the City Council approved a lesbian resident's request to raise the flag, the vote was viewed as a gesture of acceptance in a city with among the highest number of committed gay couples in Passaic County.
