Paul Lesh, 66, and Benjamin Johnson, 34, were shot and killed in separate attacks Saturday, allegedly by 34-year-old James Paul Diaz. Diaz, reported to be a Hemet resident, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of shooting at a person from a vehicle and one count of shooting at an inhabited vehicle, according to Banning police Chief Alex Diaz -- who is no relation to the suspect. Police have identified the suspect arrested in the shooting deaths of two people in an apparently random rampage in the Southern California city of Banning. Banning police said Sunday that 34-year-old James Paul Diaz was booked into jail for investigation of two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and other charges stemming from the shooting spree. Banning police on Sunday identified the suspect who they say shot and killed two people and injured two others as he drove through the Riverside County city in what appears to have been random attacks. Police said Saturday that the shooting suspect was detained during a traffic stop by Beaumont police after he was reported at 12:22 p.m. to be knocking on doors in a Beaumont neighborhood, asking if anyone had seen his children. In addition to the two counts of murder, Diaz was booked on suspicion of three counts of using a firearm to commit great bodily injury, one count of attempted murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors are pushing to bring a former Beaumont police officer back to trial after the jury on the first trial failed to reach a unanimous conclusion on whether the man blinded a woman when he used pepper spray during an arrest in 2012, officials said.
