Nine people in Westmoreland and King George counties were arrested yesterday in an early morning raid that authorities said targeted drug dealers.

Police in Westmoreland County are seeking a suspect who fled on foot after a shooting today near a school at Hague.

Across Virginia yesterday, transportation officials reported road closings on five interstates, 24 primary roads and 158 secondary roads, mostly in Hampton Roads and the Danville area.

Two neighbors have filed additional objections to the issuance of permits by Westmoreland County for the construction of an O'Gara security training base near Montross.

An offer to give the town of Colonial Beach a 1.2-acre waterfront lot to use as a park has been rejected by town officials.

New concerns over court safety have again prodded the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors to consider building a new courthouse in Montross.

Gloucester police say they arrested a man for a store robbery last year. Officers arrested 33-year-old Steve Tyler for robbing the Gamestop on Waltons Lane on December 3. Investigators arrested him in Westmoreland County, Virginia on Wednesday, just north of Tappahannock.

The general public is probably unaware that Saturday, the 26th of September morning Boy Scouts from the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck rescued victims of an accident between an activity bus and a large log loader near the Upper Lancaster Volunteer Fire Department.

About 20 youth suffered minor to life-threatening injuries when a bus ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and struck a log loader traveling in the opposite direction. The accident also involved a downed power line, which complicated rescue efforts. A MedEvac helicopter was needed for some of the injured.

Fortunately, all of this was planned as part of the 2009 Rivers District Fall Recruitment camporee for the Boy Scouts of America.

Cub Scouts were prepped with “wound kits” that included compound fractures of arms, legs and jaws, as well as abrasions, lacerations and exposed abdominal organs. About 75 Boy Scouts were organized by patrols to use their first aid skills to “rescue” the “victims” and learn triage skills.

The hands-on exercise gave the Scouts an opportunity to test their team work, first aid and CPR skills. They got an up-close look at all of the working parts of the helicopter. They saw a man in protective gear get washed down as if he had been working in a hazardous materials zone. Every boy put out a fuel fire using a dry chemical extinguisher. And every boy spent time on the nozzle of a pressurized fire hose.

For those who missed this event, ask the boys who were there how they liked it.

In a new lawsuit filed this week, opponents of an O'Gara tactical training base being built have asked a court to issue an emergency injunction to stop work at the site near Montross.

The Colonial Beach School Board has voted to ask a court to determine if B. "Anne" Congdon remains a town resident qualified to hold her seat on the board.

The Rivers District of the Heart of Virginia Council is conducting a Poker Run fundraiser on Saturday, October 3, 2009. This is an event for motorcyclists (bikers). Bikers will ride between five stops where they will draw a card. Bikers who have the best Poker hand at the end of the ride will receive prizes. There will also be door prizes after the run. The entrance fees for the event will benefit the Boy Scouts. Pass the word around to your biker friends.

Even in the current tough economic times, useful skills are always in demand. A dual-enrollment program in the marine trades, offered to area high school students by Rappahannock Community College at both campuses , has just completed its third year on a high note.

A judge today blocked the Colonial Beach School Board from replacing a member who other board members claim no longer lives in the town.

"This zoning compliance issue is giving me a real headache," Richmond attorney David S. Bailey wrote in an undated, confidential memo as he struggled to find legal avenues to attack Westmoreland County zoning approvals of an O'Gara tactical training facility near Montross.

Opponents of an O'Gara security-training base now under construction near Montross have challenged Westmoreland County 's issuance of zoning and building permits for the project.
