Grant-Funded Program to Promote Food Culture in Harrisonburg

The City of Harrisonburg will partner with Rockingham County, the Small Business Development Center , Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, and the Friendly City Food Co-op to promote the ever-growing food culture in Harrisonburg. The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development awarded the City a $35,000 Building Entrepreneurial Economies Innovation Grant to support their new "What's Cooking" program.

Plane Causes Homes Across Valley to Lose Power

Parts of Rockingham County lost power around 7:30 p.m. when 67-year-old pilot Nolan Dean, of Harrisonburg, was taking off in his Cessna from a private airstrip, and his landing gear snagged onto some power lines, severing the power line, and causing them to also fall on top of a minivan that 36-year-old Amy Duffee of Harrisonburg was driving. The fire department had her remain in the van until they could confirm the lines wouldn't be a hazard.

The call coming up just before 1 a.m., of two tractor trailers involved in an accident. This happened near mile marker 240 in Rockingham County, causing all southbound lanes to close.

Legislators list their preferred candidates for judgeships

Legislators from the 26th Judicial Circuit in the Northern Shenandoah Valley announced their support Tuesday for five attorneys to fill judgeships from the area when lawmakers meet later this month. The five candidates are: Ronald Napier, of Front Royal, and Clark Ritchie, of Broadway, for circuit court; John Hart Jr., of Harrisonburg, for general district court and Kim Athey, of Front Royal, and Anthony Bailey, of Harrisonburg, for juvenile and domestic relations court.

Legislators Announce Judgeship Picks

Clark Ritchie, the deputy commonwealth's attorney in Rockingham County, and Judge Ronald Napier, a juvenile and domestic relations court judge, are nominated for circuit court judge positions. The Virginia General Assembly would have to approve the nominations.

A 2015 charter bus carrying 17 passengers collided with a 1994 Toyota sedan at 1 p.m. Wednesday on Rawley Pike at Hinton Road in Rockingham County, according to Sgt. F.L. Tyler, spokesman for the Virginia State Police.
