Monterey County launches "Three Feet for Safety Act" awareness campaign

The Transportation Agency for Monterey County is launching a "Three Feet for Safety Act" awareness campaign as the new state law goes into effect Tuesday, Sept. 16. The law is aimed at improving safety for bicyclists and requires drivers provide at least three feet between any part of their vehicle and bicyclists when passing, Distribute 3-Feet for Safety vehicle stickers and outreach materials to Monterey County law enforcement agencies, local Department of Motor Vehicles offices, schools, civic institutions and the greater community.

Parolee arrested after traffic stop in Moss Landing

Two people were arrested in Moss Landing Sunday, including a parolee at large, after a traffic stop on Highway 1. Monterey County Sheriff's deputies conducted a stop on a car driven by Angelina Segundo, 23, in the area of Molera Road and Highway 1 for numerous vehicle code violations.

Navy identifies pilot presumed dead after crash

He was the subject of a 36-hour search in the waters off the U.S. territory of Wake Island after two F/A-18C Hornets collided in midair Friday. The other pilot safely ejected, was rescued from the ocean by helicopter and was treated and released from medical facilities aboard the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson.

Armed SF Man Arrested For Threatening To Shoot Campers At Big Sur

Deputies have arrested a man found with multiple weapons, who allegedly threatened to shoot fellow campers in Big Sur on Saturday night. According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, unemployed suspect Oleg Sinitsin, 53, of San Francisco, threatened to shoot two campers from Los Angeles at a campground on Nacimiento-Fergusson Road around 10:45 p.m. Saturday.

2 dead in Slovenia floods, Croatia also hit hard

Authorities in Slovenia say two people have died in new floods that hit the Balkans this weekend after heavy rains. Police said Sunday a 30-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl drowned after their van plunged into a flood-swollen stream northeast of the capital, Ljubljana.

California nudist camp accused of stealing water

The San Jose Mercury News reports that rangers with the Midpeninsula Open Space District descended on Lupin Lodge near Los Gatos on Thursday, saying the clothing-optional resort was illegally taking water from a nearby upstream waterfall. The resort's owners say they are entitled to use the waterfall, which they need to keep their water tank full in case of a fire and to top off their pool for both skinny-dipping and as a backup water source for a fire.

3 rescued after plane goes down in Alaska

The Alaska Air National Guard says it rescued three people after a small plane went down near Beluga Mountain, northwest of Anchorage. The plane's emergency locator beacon sent a signal to the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police briefs: Body found in Big Sur waters

First responders from multiple agencies responded Saturday morning to a location on the Big Sur coast, where they found a person floating in the water. The incident, just before 9 a.m., drew a response from Cal Fire, Mid-Coast Fire Brigade, State Park Lifeguards, Monterey County Sheriff's Deputies and Search and Rescue, American Medical Response, and the Carmel Highlands Fire District.
