Organizers hope Pocono Arts Jubilee becomes a tradition

Supporters of the arts in the Poconos kicked off Sunday what they hope will become a tradition in the area - an arts festival at Rainbow Mountain Resort. The first Pocono Arts Jubilee came about as a way to promote local artists, while benefiting two nonprofits who empower them.

Newman to be honored with the A. Mitchell Palmer Award

Four years after graduating from Stroudsburg High School and two years after his father suffered heavy financial losses in the 1955 flood, Samuel Newman, then 22, graduated with a bachelor's degree in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. "I had no idea what I wanted to do," said Newman.

Monroe County's redrawn districts change voter landscape

Monroe County is entering the home stretch of what may be its most significant state election in at least a generation. Area voters will - for the first time Nov. 4 - elect a state senator whose district includes a majority of Monroe County residents.

Clear Run Elementary students learn anti-bullying tools

It's bad enough when a child just once makes fun of or becomes violent toward another child without provocation. When the taunting or violence becomes repetitive, it becomes bullying.

Firefighters extinguish blaze at vacant Penn Hills resort

Firefighters in Monroe County have put out a fire early this evening at a building at the vacant Penn Hills resort in Stroud Township. The fire was out by about 5:45 p.m. today.

House panel faces vote on stream buffer bill

A House panel faces a vote Monday on a controversial bill to eliminate a state mandate to have forested buffers along streams designated for special environmental protection because of such factors as water quality and the presence of native brook trout. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Marcia Hahn, R-138, Nazareth, is before the Environmental Resources and Energy Committee.

East Stroudsburg pizza parlor offers discounts to homeless

Sangounchitte volunteered last year at the Monroe County Homelessness Initiative's day, when the center was on Lower Main Street in Stroudsburg, and again earlier this year, when the center was taken over by a Philadelphia-based agency and moved to nearby First Street. The center provides a place from which the homeless can apply for jobs, housing and various necessary forms of identification, in addition to offering monthly basic health care at a clinic.

The Poconos remember 9/11

Tom Bowditch of Cresco, a member of the Monroe County Honor Guard, plays taps during the East Stroudsburg Elks Lodge 9/11 ceremony Thursday night. The ceremony memorializing the dead from the September 11 attacks included a gun salute and the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner."

The United States attorney's office charged Kyle Westry, 21, of Tobyhanna, for distributing heroin over a nine-month period, it announced Wednesday. The charge stems from an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Pennsylvania State Police, and the Monroe County Drug Task Force.

No one bids on Fernwood Hotel

The owner of the shuttered Fernwood Hotel won a reprieve when the property failed to draw a single bid during Wednesday's Monroe County tax sale. The property - owned by the Ertle family's E Hotels LP - owes $1.01 million in property taxes and fees from 2012.

Plans to replace building after deadly shooting hit snag

Plans to replace the Monroe County township building that was the scene of a deadly mass shooting have hit a snag. Ross Township Supervisors had voted unanimously to build the new spot after last year's shooting spree, but all four bids by construction companies so far have been rejected for being too high, despite officials saying they are actively working to build a new spot.

Ex-pastor gets 20-40 years in first wife's death

A former Pennsylvania pastor already serving life without parole for killing his second wife has been sentenced to more prison time for the death of his first wife in Lebanon County. Arthur "AB" Schirmer, 66, was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison Wednesday afternoon for killing Jewel Schirmer in 1999.

The goal of the assessment is to gauge the overall health status and health needs of the local community, what health care services are actively being used and what actions need to be taken in the future to address these needs. ESU and PMC need input from the community in order to get a better understanding of the specific health concerns.

Rape report at West End Fair unfounded, state police say

A 22-year-old Monroe County woman who reported being raped at the West End Fair last month will be charged with making false reports to law enforcement officials. State police said their investigation found that Danielle Dutka, 22, of Brodheadsville, was not raped.

Mady's Angels recognized worldwide

M.J. Law said his ever-growing Mady's Angels group based in Middle Smithfield Township is gaining recognition around the world, although there are still some people in the Monroe County region who do not know about it. Law and his wife, Laura, founded the organization of primary 15 volunteers driven to help families in need and grieving families who have lost a child.

A.B. Schirmer to be sentenced for death of first wife

Former Lebanon Methodist pastor Arthur 'A.B.' Schirmer will be sentenced Wednesday on a third-degree murder charge for the death of his first wife, Jewel Schirmer, in 1999. Former Methodist pastor Arthur "A.B." Schirmer, who entered a no-contest plea to third-degree murder in June, will be sentenced Wednesday afternoon by President Judge John Tylwalk.
