Intercepting those nutrients BEFORE they got into the water would be too much trouble for somebody. What's the fecal coliform count on that beach?

Agree about intercepting the nutrients before hey hit the ocean, but Maui's algae problems stem more from the use of fertilizers (especially inorganic) for sugar, pineapple, golf courses and lawns. The composting idea is good, but it should be extended--ban inorganic fertilizers and have green waste collection, composting and distribution of the resulting fertilizer.

With the rising cost of fertilizers these kinds of project are doable. Seaweed will make great compost. Just keep it organic.

Is there a potential for salt poisoning of agricultural land? Is the algae washed/cleaned of salt?

If all the salt is washed out, it should make great fertilizer. If someone were to market it and send it to Oahu, I would buy it. Good job Maui!

Certainly a wise use of taxpayer monies and with beneficial results, great natural organic compost, cleaner less foul smelling beaches, less nutrients released back into the ocean and better health for coral and fish. Kudos...finally some public servants who are receptive to the needs of the people!

This looks like a very promising partnership among the government, the scientific community, and farmers. It could become a win-win contribution to sustainability.

Good use of doing something that works in other areas and replicating it so we all benefit. Good work. You don't hear too many good feeling stories anymore!!! Great Job!!!

The smallest crop yields in the world occur in Iraq where irrigation practices have built up the salt over millennia. This process should do the same thing over a far shorter period because the algae has spent time in an ocean environment.
