Intercepting those nutrients BEFORE they got into the water would be too much trouble for somebody. What's the fecal coliform count on that beach?

Agree about intercepting the nutrients before hey hit the ocean, but Maui's algae problems stem more from the use of fertilizers (especially inorganic) for sugar, pineapple, golf courses and lawns. The composting idea is good, but it should be extended--ban inorganic fertilizers and have green waste collection, composting and distribution of the resulting fertilizer.

now, at long last the organic solution to problems.. not just send it to the "DUMP" but to use this good organic growth.. keep up the good work..aloha

If all the salt is washed out, it should make great fertilizer. If someone were to market it and send it to Oahu, I would buy it. Good job Maui!

This looks like a very promising partnership among the government, the scientific community, and farmers. It could become a win-win contribution to sustainability.

Good use of doing something that works in other areas and replicating it so we all benefit. Good work. You don't hear too many good feeling stories anymore!!! Great Job!!!

What genus /species of algae are you removing from the Maui beaches?

The smallest crop yields in the world occur in Iraq where irrigation practices have built up the salt over millennia. This process should do the same thing over a far shorter period because the algae has spent time in an ocean environment. |
