14 candidates named for University of Hawaii Board of Regents

The Candidate Advisory Council for the University of Hawaii Board of Regents on Tuesday released a list of 14 candiates for four vacant seats on the governing board of the state's largest university system. The candidates will be presented to Gov. Neil Abercrombie for interim appointments that will then be subject to confirmation by the Senate.

Mayor, Council Chair Announce Regular and Holiday Landfill Operations, Trash Pick-ups to Resume

WAILUKU, MAUI, Hawai'i - Mayor Alan Arakawa and Council Chair Gladys Baisa today announced that regular and holiday landfill operations and trash pick-ups will resume effective immediately. The Mayor cautioned that this comes at the cost of depleting the Solid Waste Division's annual funding in a few months and that to restore services will require the administration to submit a new budget amendment early next year.

Dairy Road Water Shutdown Scheduled for Thursday Night

Some customers on Dairy Road will have no water on Thursday, September 11, 2014, while contractors connect a new waterline for the Kahului Airport Access Road, Phase I project. The work is scheduled from 11:00 p.m. Thursday night to 6:00 a.m. Friday morning and will affect customers on Dairy Road from Alamaha Street to Puunene Avenue; Pakaula Street, Ohekani, Lehuakona, Ala Makani, Hookele Street from Mokulele Highway to Pakaula Street.

Plumbing Permit and Inspection Section

The purpose of obtaining a plumbing permit is to provide minimum requirements and standards for the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare. Plumbing permits are required for new and retrofit plumbing installations to allow the County to regulate the qualifications of installers, check the proposed plans and to inspect the plumbing/gas installations to ensure they are in compliance with the Uniform Plumbing Code as amended and local municipal codes.

Arizona woman drowns while snorkeling off Lanai

Maui County Police said the woman was on a Pacific Whale Foundation "Discovery" snorkel cruise and brought back on the vessel, where cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated. Despite the efforts, the woman was pronounced dead after the vessel arrived at Manele Harbor at about 10:35 a.m. A 42-year-old Hono-lulu man died Saturday after running into trouble while diving off Lanai, Maui County officials said.

Honolulu man, 42, dies after diving off Lanai

A 42-year-old Honolulu man died Saturday after running into trouble while diving off Lanai, Maui County officials said. Police said Pablo was diving with a friend in the bay at the end of Lapaiki Trail just after 10 a.m. when the friend found him floating unconscious in the water.

Groundbreaking ceremony set

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Wednesday for the $4.2 million Heritage Hall, with side-by-side cultural resource centers, one Portuguese and one Puerto Rican, and a multipurpose hall with a certified kitchen, the hall's board of directors announced. The hall and kitchen will be available for community use, officials said.

Hawaii Land Use Commission back in session next week

The Hawaii Land Use Commission , a key state agency that helps provide the framework for land use in the Islands, is back in session next week after a couple of months off due to the resignations of some of its commissioners following the enactment of a law that calls for their financial disclosure statements to be made available to the public. Daniel Orodenker , executive officer of the LUC, told PBN Wednesday that the commission will be meeting as much as necessary, including regularly, which is once every two weeks.
